Question '98 300 CD-RWs?

My parents have a 98 ES300 with the standard "premium" sound system. It may soon be handed down to me with a glorious 175k mile count on it and I wouldn't mind being able to get some quality music to listen to.

I tried and failed with DVDs, since it is only capable of playing CDs.
I wonder if the stock sound system can play CD-RWs which are more cost-effective than CD-Rs.

Any specific brands? What type of settings? Can I try MP3s?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

It will not play MP3s, just regular Audio CDs that you can record.

Not sure about CD-RWs, (try one) but almost any CD-R should be fine. Blank CD-Rs are so cheap these days.

I'd get a cassette tape adapter or FM transmitter and plug your MP3 player or phone or whatever in that way. My tape deck and CD changer are both broken, so I got a Scosche brand FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette jack. The quality of the sound is surprisingly great! Just find a good empty frequency and you're set.

Unfortunately it can only read CD-Rs, from personal experience. I used a tape cassette adapter and it works just perfectly

Even the CD-R's aren't a guarantee to work. On my '01 they were spotty at times...
