Default CEL on. Codes P0031 & P2238..Please advice

Hi All,

I am new to the CL forums and have some read postings about CEL being on. I have 2003 ES 300 and CEL has come on. I live in Maine and it had heavy snow recently and I did not clean my car and it was fully covered with snow and ice. I finally decided to clean my car and had the car running for about 45 minutes with heater and air fully on inside the car to melt the ice on the wind shield. I cleaned the snow and ice and everything but the CEL came on after that. I drove for about 5 miles and CEL went away. But it came back on the next time I drove it. I went to autozone as suggested by the forum in other posts to get the code readed. The CEL codes came up as P0031 and P2238. I read some more forums that suggested to either deactivate the negative terminal of the battery or remove the EFI fuse to reset the onboard computer so that CEL goes away and I can know for sure if it comes back again there is something faulty in the car. I could not remove the negative terminal with the tools I have. I decided to go the EFI fuse route. I tried removing EFI fuse (20 amps yellow color) but it is very tightly attached. Can you please guide how to remove the EFI fuse and replace it back again.

Thanks a lot.

Sounds like you have a bad Bank one, sensor one oxygen sensor.

The fuses should just pull out. Try wiggling it as you pull.

I may be confused by your terminology but you need to disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On my es300 the cable is only held on by a wing nut. Yours may be different.

As a general rule trying to reset the check engine light, by either disconnecting the battery or pulling the fuse, without really knowing whats going on is not a good idea.

At minimum, get yourself a cheap OBD 2 code reader, for about $30. You will than be able to read the codes, and reset them properly yourself.

I also own a 2003 Lexus es300 w/142,000 miles. My CEL came on about a month ago. I finally had time to take it to my mechanic. His diagnostic check reveal two codes: (P0031 O2 & P2238 O2). Which simply means my; sensor heater control circuit and sensor pumping current circuit is not working properly "AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR B1S1 part# 234-9047. My total cost to fix this problem was less than $300. I hope this has been helpful.
