Most reputable shops and dealerships prefer to use their own parts so they can warranty both labor AND parts. It's sometimes hard to warranty someone else's part if it fails. The extra coin is worth piece of mind if you intend on paying someone. Dealerships have the capital if something catastrophic happens during or after a repair and have the ability to address any issues resulting in their parts failing or sub par workmanship.
Bottom line? If you want to pay someone, use a reputable shop and let them use their parts. Most of the time there is room for negotiation and you will walk away with a repair warranty.
If you are going to do it yourself, then either kit would be fine.

you said: " have acquired the car with 173k on the clock and have no records of the belt being done. I'm thinking that at this point, I should go all out and replace everything in the front of the engine. I'm talking: timing belt, water pump, two accessory belts, two camshaft seals, crankshaft seal, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, hydraulic tensioner, and the timing cover gaskets."
if the seals aren't leaking, why do the extra work?

No, I have absolutly no schooling. Backyard Mechanic. I swapped in a 2.5L JDM engine into my Camry and threw my TRD SC onto it. They don't teach you that in school.....And just an FYI. Being a "Certified Mechanic" doesn't mean Jack *****.

agreed with him, we may not be certified but we'll do a hell of a better job than any shop because we're not doing it as a full time job means we're passionate about what we do.
pretty much we do it because we want to, not that we have to.

X3, certification doesn't mean much, only time it matters is when you are trying to get a job.
I know mechanics who went to school for 5 years, and still manage to screw up every job they take on. < I'm not saying that all of them are like that, just that hands-on experience is way better than being stuck in a room being told how to do it rather than actually doing it.
The mechanics that haven't gone to school, or haven't gone for long, usually do a much better job because they are passionate about cars.

I know Adam (asg14) personally and have known him for several years....hes a good friend and a quite competent mechanic....as a toyota expert level certified technician employed at a dealership with 6 years experience I can vouch for his skills....he's one of the biggest assets to the camry/solara/ES/avalon community and has performed many operations and custom work most "certified" techs would not dream of.
Adam is one of the few people I trust my car with, and i trust no one with caroline.
