trying to get a new computer into my car somehow i broke the piece that attaches the review mirror to the windshield mount. anyone know if its a universal part(that a windshield company can replace?) or do i have to goto the dealership for it? thanks for the help

Off the top of my head, I'm going to say that it's a universal mount since the factory rear view mirror for your '96 does not come with an auto-dimming feature.
