Default example of dealership v/s independant shop prices

my mom has a 2000 es300 with 57k in miles. her rear main seal is leaking for some reason....anyways lexus of denver quoted 1456+tax for the repair. my independant shop i use here in colorado springs quoted $475 parts and labor total.

so there ya go. anyone have ideas why her rear main seal went out this soon?

This is a common problem amongst most of us with a '92-'96 or '97-'01 ES, especially ones with high mileage. I had mine replaced at the 90K service for my '01. No real reason I can think of other than it may have to do with the poor quality of the factory main seal part.

Red face

yeah i can understand that. mine at 155k is starting to have some slight leaking. but common a seal that cant last past 57k? that weak. especially for a "luxury brand"

just pitiful.

For the quote from the indy shop, does that include the use of OEM Lexus/Toyota rear main seal parts? If not, I would heed with caution in taking the car to that shop since there may be a good chance that the seal would not hold up for long-term. The Lexus quote is outrageous. I would try to get a quote from Toyota and compare that to the indy shop.

Cool

IDK everybody use to blame the RMS on any oil leak, but over the last few years we've found out the rear valve cover does most of the oil leaking.
Who knows why it went bad. The car v6's aint the first Toyota to have leaky main seals.
