Default OEM Oil Filter

hey guys, I usually use Mobile 1 oil filters but at ~$12 a piece I am going to switch (in college) I just want to use the OEM ones...I want to be sure this is it?
http://www.irontoad.com/Merchant2/me...Code=1997es300
Is this a good filter?
Does it have to anti-drainback valve?
Thanks!

That's the right OEM filter for your ES. I am not sure what you mean by an anti-drainback valve, but from my experience, the oil filter on all '97+ ES is installed underneath the exhaust manifold when you are standing under the hood. Hope this helps out.

I was asking about a valve in the oil filter itself. It will stop the oil from "falling" out when unscrewing it.

Oh I see what you're saying..

Unfortunately, oil WILL spill out when the oil filter is unscrewed, and you can freely blame that on Lexus engineering of the filter location. This is why it is important to keep a drain pan directly underneath the oil filter when unscrewing it. Most of us who are DIY oil changers (including myself) have complained about this particular design of the oil filter and the location, but there's not much we can do except to try to catch the old oil from spilling.

do you guys use these filters? I read that the new YZZD1s are using cheap paper filter elements in comparison with the last ones. Maybe I should stick with the Mobile 1s??? Thanks

I can only speak from my experience with the YZZD1 filter (Japanese made) and the 08922-02011 filter (N/A Toyota OEM version). They are both relatively the same filter and can be used interchangeably in the ES, and I believe either of them can be purchased at your local Toyota parts counter at almost the same price as the one you saw on irontoad.com.

I have never tried any other type of oil filter, but I know steviej has used K&N or Mobil-1 oil filter in his '02 ES. Maybe he'll chime in this thread, or you can send him a PM about it.

My opinion is, stick with either the Mobil-1 (considering you have no problems with it) or the Toyota/Lexus OEM filter, and you should be fine.

chime chime chime.

yes, as far as I know and have read the Toyota OEM YZZD1 filter does have an antidrain back valve in it. Just like the old one and the Mobil 1 and the K&N.

lexusk8, this is a spring loaded valve inside the oil filter that closes when the oil flow stops to prevent complete oil drain back to the oil pan. This way there is oil closer to the mechanical parts that need it upon start up. Nice feature.

It is a nice feature but the Mobile 1s don't have it, another reason I want to switch.

I believe it does and it is the nitrile rubber diaphragm design. Unless they have changed design since 2000. 1999 study. updated in 2000

I have used Mobile 1 filters since I got my car (about a year and a half ago) and oil spills out everytime I unscrew them. I did have the privaledge of using a OEM toyota (before the filter change) and it was so nice not having to worry about oil spilling.

DK, having an anti-drainback valve doesn't mean a little oil isn't going to spill out especially on the 1MZFE. Look at the angle the filer is at -- any oil on the outside of the valve is running down the side of the motor when the filter is removed. Where esle is it to go? When complete removed the filter still has lots of oil in it.

Oil spills out of the toyota filters and the K&N. Not to long ago Toyota engineers havve even gone as far as mounting a spout/funnel on the side of the engine block to direct the flow of the spilage to one stream.

yeah, I was just about to reply about that.

I did an oil change yesterday and took out the old Mobile 1 and I did see the spring. I guess the Toyota one that I had just spilled a lot less. I ended up taking apart the filter (I heard you could tell your engine condition this way?) and there was a lot of oil in there. Anyways, the filter just looked like the paper element was set in oil and let it soak up. I did not see any debris or build up, good sign I assume

Oh yeah, for this oil change I used the normal Mobile 1 with Valvoline max life 5W-30. It is now costing almost $27 to do non synthetic oil changes myself The oil was $2.59 per quart and the filter was $12. OUCH, oh well, she's worth it.
