Lexus cheaped out on the tires
#46
It is a consumer survey ranking 13 attributes (scale 1-10...10 being best) for various categories of tires. Re: "noise"s...Pirelli P7 A/S - 9.1/ Michelin Premier A/S - 8.7/ Michelin Primacy MXV4 8.7/ Michelin Primacy MXM4 8.3
Standard Touring All Season
Bridgestone Turanza EL 400-02 - 5.2
Amazing that between the two classes of Grand Touring and Standard Touring there are a total of 59 "ranked" tires. The Bridgestone is number 59 out of 59!
The Pirelli P7 is #1 and the Michelin Premier is #2...with only .02 between the two...essentially tied for #1. The MX4V is #6 and the MXM4 is #11.
BTW...IF "noise" is your very strong primary requirement the Pirelli is best by a bit. In my case I wanted a quite tire but determined that snow/ice was also very important here in MN. Example was my 200 mile trip north Wednesday...spotty icy roads on freeway...and snow/ice covered roads in my rural neighborhood. Thus, the Premier seemed like a good choice AND the Lexus dealer had in stock.
My understanding is that the Premier will eventually replace the Primacy...told that nearly a year ago. Primacy still out there and I do not know for sure the forward Michelin plans for the Primacy...
I use TireRack.com for lots of info regarding tires. Much to study if you wish. Probably would be pleased with any of the choices above...vs the Bridgestone. I would go with P7/Michelin Premier/Primacy MXV4 or 3rd choice Primacy MXM$...but would probably be OK with any of the 4.
Good Luck...TomMartin

So when the Pirelli P7 is noted, is it the P7 Cinturato All Season or the P7 Cinturato All Season Plus? Also, I see that the price for these tires is considerably less than the Michelin MXV, MXM, or Premier tires in the same size.

Yes, I've been discussing the Pirelli P7 Plus.
Note that the Michelin MXV4 and Michelin Premier tires are NOT available for the ES 18" wheels (225/45R18).

For the most part, we have no major complaints with our Turanzas. They aren't great, but they don't seem awful either. The car is so much quieter than our previous one, and a bit quieter than our RX with Michelins so I hadn't really thought that much about noise with respect to the tires.
With that said, we do have a handling problem on certain road surfaces. There are several new roads around here and the concrete has grooves cut into it, probably for winter traction. Anyway, the car feels very squirrelly on those road surfaces, feeling unstable and like it is almost wobbling back and forth. Our RX tracks straight and has no problem at all, beyond the expected mild vibration. I had wondered it the problem was with the tires, and now all this discussion seems to lend even more concern about the tires causing the problem. Has anyone else noticed any significant handling anomalies on some road surfaces with the Bridgestone Turanzas?

Great thread. I too have Bridgestone Turanzas. My car seems to have a lot of road noise for such a quiet car. I'm definitely going to look into the Pirellis. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread and all of the people who contributed to a valuable discussion,

The Primacy MXV4 has been cancelled by Michelin and replaced with the Premier. Whatever is still out there is remaining stock or made for OEM and not for resale.
I wouldn't buy them just because you don't know how old they are, and if you ever had to replace one or two, you'd be out of luck.

So the P7+ is cheaper and better than the Michelin, sounds like a good deal. One thing i would like to ask is my 25k service is coming up does the dealer really need to do anything, i would hate to pay for a tire rotation when new tires are needed on my car anyway.

I never go in a say I want the 10,000, 20,000 or 60,000 mile service. Every 10,000 miles ask for an oil change and tire rotation at the Lexus/Toyota dealership. This should be less than $80. Every 30,000 miles the brake fluid needs to be changed and about $100. Every 20,000 miles change the air and cabin filters. This combined takes five minutes and the air filter can be bought on line at Lexus Parts World for $18. The cabin air filter can be bought at Walmart for $18, It is the Fram Fresh Breeze #10285 with carbon and baking soda to filter the air. Wiper blade inserts again can be bought at Lexus Parts World for $20 for both refills and takes five minutes to replace. You are done until 100,000 miles. At Lexus Parts World use cl5 in the promo code for 10% discount. If you go in an ask for the 10,000, 20,000 30,000 maintenance you will be paying big bucks for a lot more items you do not need checked and inspected. Once a year replace the key fob battery cr2032. Keep receipts for everything. I take my oil filter bought at Lexus Parts World and 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 purchased at Walmart for $24 to my local Toyota dealer and they charge me $15 labor for the oil and $20 for the tire rotation.
