Default Paint coming off Rims

I bought my 2013 Lexus ES350 from Valencia back last year in November. I asked them to paint my rims gloss black. They did free of charge and now the paint is mysteriously coming off. Now I've noticed the job to be a "rattle can" job. Should I try to call them to see if they can repaint it or should I just have them done by someone else?

It appears from your photos that the wheels weren't primed properly. The one photo shows the paint to be flaking rather than wearing thin. I would certainly start with the dealer that painted them in the first place. On the other hand, you might just get another crap job. You have to judge whether the first job looked professional or was it a quickie paint job. Usually, Lexus dealers don't do too many things for free. If it were my car I'd take it to a body shop and have them painted professionally. Bear in mind that at this point you may have to have the first paint removed.

I agree. If you want to keep those rims, the boched paint needs to be removed, and then a proper paint job applied. Do NOT have the same guy re-do the paint -- it will only be botched again.

Alternatively, you might want to shop for new rims. A set of wheels from ebay might not cost any more than having the old one repainted by a good shop.

Aluminum wheels do not hold paint very well at all, even when using self etching primers. The same is true with powder coating aluminum, but the powder coating materials have gotten much better over the years. Most shops that do powder coat aluminum wheels will tell you that chances are it will begin to flake off in a couple years especially if you drive on roads treated with chemicals during the winter months.

I had wheels powdercoated before and after 2 years they were still in great condition and only had very minor chipping on maybe two wheels.
