Default road trip / mileage

Just got home from a 9 day road trip.... drove a total of 1650 miles and was pretty happy with the gas mileage.... just looking at the computer, the best mileage I got on the trip was 32.4 mpg.... most of the trip it showed 30.5 Pretty happy with those numbers, even though I didn't actually check the mpg myself, just going by the computer... that was driving around 75 mph with a/c on...

Attached is a screen shot of my mpg with the ES350 for my current tank of gas. Driving with this tank of gas has been done with the AC on and mostly on county roads with speed limits of 55 mph. The ES is now almost exactly 2 years old. During that time, the actual calculated mpg has been right around 32 mpg. I find that the computer on the ES calculates fuel economy within about 1/2 mpg of what is actually achieved. So, with my current tank, I'm doing a bit better than the average that the vehicle has achieved, but, even the 32 mpg overall is, I think, quite good.

One factor that helps my mpg is that I don't often need to drive in stop-and-go conditions, but a factor that makes my mpg lower than it might otherwise be is that almost all of the terrain on which I drive is quite hilly. I think that the two main things that can maximize fuel economy are (a) accelerating in a manner that gets the transmission out of the lower gears as quickly as possible and (b) driving in a manner that minimizes the number of times that the transmission needs to downshift. Also, I try to anticipate when I will need to be stopping or slowing down, and I take my foot off of the accelerator as I approach things like stop signs and traffic lights.

While, when I do have to drive in stop-and-go conditions, my fuel economy goes down, I can still get around 25-26 mpg driving in town and using the same basic principles. Even without using extreme hyper-miling techniques, the 3.5 liter V6 on the ES is capable of getting very good fuel economy.
