Lightbulb DIY Ignition button LED swap

THIS IS ALL DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK~~~ I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AT ALL FOR ANYONE REFERRING TO THIS AS A GUIDE***

Finally able to get around to posting the DIY of changing the ignition button LED's. The stock came with the overall green for text, green light-up for when the brake was suppressed, and amber light-up for when only the accessories are powered on without engine start-up. I originally wanted these colors to be changed to white text, white light-up and red accessory. However, due to the plastic the light goes through for the text, the white came out to be off colored yellow compared the engine dash. So I changed it to red text and left the white engine ready-on and red accessory.

So to start, remove the ignition button assembly out. Do no reach into the button itself, try to remove the fancy shiny silver plastic trim and pull the switch out. No need to remove dash or anything to get behind, if you have the leverage it will come out and you can disconnect the harness it connects to.

Now you need to expose the circuit board of the assembly. There are some tabs you need to get some leverage to get the plastic cover to slide out with. I used a small jeweler's screw drive and a pocket knife to be able to get past the tabs and remove the cover. Now you should see the circuit board. The next step is to desolder to connections for "ANT" in two of the corners. These connection anchor the board down so don't try to remove the board much before clearing those two points or you will start bending those pins. I used a copper ribbon to suck up most of the solder and then gently pried the board off continually on both sides (using the screwdriver since it gets hot) until it was free. There are also pry tabs for the circuit board itself with the plastic case so you have to kind of finesse both while you desolder the antennae connections.

Now the little board assembly can be removed. When you remove the board, be careful that you do not lose the small steel ball that is kind of lodged in the plastic, this ball is what gives the button the kind of pushy feel when you press the button. On the other side you can finally see the LED's to the ignition. The small single two-pronged LED (green) is for the main text and the larger three-pronged LED (amber/green) is for the light indication above the text. I took a picture and marked the leads for the LED's for what is negative and what are the positives. BE CAREFUL TO NOT COMPLETELY REMOVE THE WHOLE STOCK LED's. They spot-welded the LED's on this metal surface (sparked the two metals for a quick connection). The metal surface will most likely not get solder to stick to easily so leave a small amount of the prongs from the LED's connected so you can solder onto those.

Space turned out to be very tight for the dual bicolor light part. I did not have a three-pronged bicolor LED but that LED is just two LED's in once with a common negative. So we can try to fit the two LED's in there. However, if you want your button to be just as smooth to suppress as before the install, you may need to shave some plastic away or use very small LED's. You will see I have two different pictures of the LED job. The one quoted "hopefully it fits" did not actually fit lol. So what I did was that I changed the larger bulb LED (it was a red LED) and used a 1206 surface mount LED soldered onto some prongs to free up space. In that picture, too, the right LED was white. When I finally installed it the white looked kind of yellow compared to the other whites LED's I had through-out the car so I wasn't satisfied (picture in gallery). I was out of RED bulb LED's so I rigged up some 1206 red LED's with prongs into those spots. (picture quoted "the finished product, went back to change.....") From there I was able to get them to fit well. Throughout the process I kept reinserting the circuit board back into the assembly to test how it worked and how the push of the button felt, if it stuck in or was a clean push. It took a while and small amounts of shaving off plastic in parts to finally get the depress motion to feel smooth again.

Now once you're happy with colors and the motion of the button, don't forget to resolder the ANT connections and put it together and done!
The light in mine now shines red for text, red for accessory light-up and white whenever I suppress the brake (which looks great and super bright as white- I always enjoy simply starting up my car now to see that white shine lol)

AGAIN, THIS IS ALL DONE AT YOUR OWN RISK~~~ I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY AT ALL FOR ANYONE REFERRING TO THIS AS A GUIDE. I AM HAPPY TO HELP OTHERS DO THIS SO THEY ENJOY THEIR CAR, BUT AGAIN, THIS IS ALL ON YOU.******
