Default Is my dipstick too long?

No it's not what you're thinking .

On my dipstick I always get an oil film that extends about an inch above the upper dot, no matter how long the car (2008) sits. Always get this reading no matter how many miles since the oil change and I've had several changes from different shops and I doubt they are all filling above the 6.4 qt limit. Car runs fine. Is this common for the ES 350?

No. I think it is overfilled.

Agree.
6.4 quarts specified in owner's manual puts you at least 1/2 inch over full when it sits over night.

A ten minute drain leaves too much oil in the upper portion of the engine. To do a 6.4 quart oil change requires at least a six hour drain period..

Thanks for your replies.

Just seems so unlikely that I would get an overfill more than once. But if the car needs hours of drain time to make room for 6.4 qts then that would explain some of it. I doubt that Firestone waits more than 30 minutes for draining.

Also I find that this is a hard stick to read. It seems a tight fit in the tube and maybe there is oil clinging to the tube walls that smears onto the stick when removed and reinserted. Even with multiple dips and wiping clean after each I get film above the FULL dot. It's also a different length on one side vs. the other, so I'm assuming that the lower level is the more correct.

By comparison my wife's Honda gives a very clear, same on both sides, reading.

My dipstick does the same if put in 180*. Use the side that gives you the lower reading. I discovered this while doing my second oil change on my ES.
In regards to overfill, I wouldn`t be concerned unless you do some real spirited driving or climb real steep hills.
if you happen to do either for at least 1 minute, (it gives the oil a chance to circulate) stop and check your dipstick for air entrainment (small air bubbles). If there aren`t any, your good to go. Race cars have baffle plates built in to prevent the oil from hitting the crankshaft to eliminate this problem from occurring. The 467 hp F sport may have these baffles built in as well. I seriously doubt the Es350 has them but I could be wrong.
