Alternator rebuild kit

It's easier and a little bit quicker, but definitely not cheaper.
I have a 2002 and 2(?) years ago searched high and low for a rebuild kit w/o success. I went to a local auto electrical shop and they sold me the brushes and bearings for $26. I could not match the bearings online in any reference catalog.
If you do not have a place locally, this is the place I went to:
http://www.romaineelectric.com/
They had a lot of outbound packages stacked up so they must also do a lot of internet business.
FYI, the adjusting bolt set up on these is a little Rube Goldberg-ish. I saw a post last week were someone broke theirs reinstalling it. Note how it is oriented before disassembling it. Try to find instructions about re-assembly before you do it - I found some when I searched but did not bookmark it, sorry.

That's very cheap a brush assembly alone on Rockauto is $15. Great if you can rebuild the alternator yourself but by the time I disassemble and clean everything, press out (or grind out) the bearings etc. I'd rather buy a reman unit that looks like new no hassle. Plus I got one that has 50 more amps of output.

Rebuilding isn't an option for everyone, but if you can it has a big advantage over a rebuild. That's re-using your factory voltage regulator.
A lot of the rebuilds on the market today - and I mean mostly Chinese sourced ones - have very low quality boards and often completely incompatible ones. Not all rebuilds fall in this category - a lot are done in Mexico and have much better QC. But it's just not uncommon to have to put in three under the warranty period in order to get a properly built one.
I did have to put in one in a friend's vehicle and there was no downtime to sit around and wait, so I made sure to check the source and found O'Reillys line came from Mexico and went with that. It works fine and has held up. So I'm not opposed to rebuilds, but on the particular case of the alternator, it's buyer beware unless you shop carefully these days.

I agree with what you're saying, I've seen so many auto parts store rebuilds fail don't think I've seen one last more than 2-3 years they are terrible. The Ebay seller I got mine from uses the Denso core and replaces what is necessary which is usually just brushes and bearings.

I purchased mine from Amazon (Denso - remanufactured) for $80 little over a year. Current price is $164. As we all know, Amazon price fluctuates and need to watch and buy when it drops: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
