Default Strange problem, alternator adjustment bolt snapped

99 ES300 alt swap problem

TL;DR

I swap to a 2001 or 2003 Highlander alt for the V6 / looks 100% nearly identical.

Squeeze her in, even on lowest adjustment bolt would let it sit, new (looks same size as old) belt wouldn't fit.

Get the old belt on, lift up alt manually screwed adjustment bolt (without alt sitting)

Ended up with belt a bit loose, so today I got extensions to reach the bolt better. I get the belt almost how it was prior to alt change. Poof bolt snapped. Also belt is still loose volts going 12.30 to 14.40~

I can't tell why this happened... Looks like the end of the bolt is against the engine (alt is sitting up fine, when the lock bolt was loose even) I expected it to drop lol.

So what made it happen and how fix?

I'd normally guess the lock bolt being tightened, but it was loose and alt is at same position.

Yep the adjusting one

In my quick haste to finish yesterdays work (today was just tighten belt more) I totally forgot to not undo the lock bolt but the pivot one.

I read I need to find heavy duty (9?) bolt. Not sure of length, but that home depot/etc should be ok

Ok guys

Update

So the Highlander Alternator (2001 or 2003) 100amp has larger pulley very small amount. So you need to use highlander alt/ac drive belt! I wish that was mentioned, all I read online is that these cars you can swap alts no problem. I'd of swapped pulley if knew before installed.

Toyota gave me the bolt, it was very slightly different but worked.

Thanks!
