Default Need quick buying advice

Hello I'm interested in buying a 1996 coach edition ES300. Here's the description from the ad:Selling my 96 lexus es300 coach edition , it is an american car has NO rust on the car , has been undercoated , has 153000 miles on it. motor has been replaced, it has 35000 km on it ,transmission shifts smooth car has electric windows and seats , power sunroof leatherseats , autostart ,car has been very well maintained I've kept on top of oil changes and any other work that it has needed , i keep the car clean and wax it regularly the car has 4 brand new goodyear tires and 4 good winter tires , the brakes have just been done and a transmission flush and coolant flush , looking to get 2000$ make me an offer, may trade for atv or a dirtbike , COMES ETESTED !

I've checked it out, and it drives smooth with a few knocks over the bumps and sounds like something in the exhaust is a bit loose. The entire engine bay and underside has been under coated with black oil coating.
The front bumper is a bit rough with chips and sag in the middle. Otherwise the body and interior are in good shape.
Is it worth the purchase?

Make sure the black oil is not hiding the rust!!
Unless you are mechanic knowledgeable, I advise not buying an old vehicle.
If you still interested, take it to Lexus dealership (or other Lexus knowledgeable shop) to have an used car inspect with engine compression test. This will run you some money.....but you need assurance for buying an old vehicle.

I have a 97. At this age, there will be some wear on the interior. AC vents are going to be loose, panels on the door loose, seats worn, etc. The motor should be rock solid, mine hasnt been replaced and I have 140k on the clock. I wonder why his was? These engines can go for 300k EASY. Most on CL are in the 200s.

At this age, the suspension and drivetrain are going to be a bit worn. My CV shaft assemblies (arms that go from the transmission to the wheels) pop, etc. To be expected. If hes done suspension work recently, youre in luck. Otherwise, if you want a smooth ride, be prepared to drop $800-1000 in parts, more in labor.

Otherwise, I really like the ES300 if you know what theyre about. $2000 seems mostly fair.

If you're able to put the car up on ramps, give it a thorough inspection underneath, both with the front wheels up, then with the rears up on the ramps. Look for rust, oil leaks, signs of being damaged by road debris, and any parts that need replacing, as well as those that have been replaced. Take your time. Old cars like this will never be perfect, but you're looking for any major red flags. Sounds like a $1500US car to me.

Take it to a Lexus dealer and have it inspected. They normally charge between $100 - $200 but will give a list of things wrong with car and approximate cost to fix them.
They will also will pull the history on the car by the VIN number. Good luck.
