Newbie with 2000 es300 with flickering engine lights
2000 es300 with 250,000 miles and in great condition
Sluggish engine turn over when starting
All lights are dim until rpms come up
When I turn on headlights and A/C the clock and gear indicator lights as well as seatbelt or any other of those type of lights begin to flicker
Web the flickering happens, it shifts strange. At a slightly higher rpm than normal and acts indecisive about going into gear. Like a quick "in out in"
Transmission has 125,000 miles on it
What's wrong?

11-12 volts when not running
12-13 volts while running
Battery is old. Guess it could hold proper voltage but can't pass ampage,
Would a dying battery affect shifting?

Your voltages are too low.
A dying battery, and/or low charging voltage could effect, amongst others, the engine and transmission management systems, and computers. This can cause the symptoms that you described.

Im not sure if youre in Canada or California, but if you're California than any Autozone will check your charging system free of charge. If you're in Canada, than any garage is equipped to do it, but they'll charge you for it.
If you're in Canada and your Battery is more than 4 years old, you might as well change it without testing it. Best place to get them is from Costco. Their batteries are excellent, and there is a no questions asked 5 years money back/exchange warranty. ( could be 3 years, can't remember)
Should. Cost less than $80 CDN, and you can change it yourself in a few minutes.

They'll come out to your car, with their specialized equipment and test your complete charging system (battery and Alternator) free of charge. Car will be running.
Can't beat that

Guess I'm answering all my own questions today. Found tensioner rigged up on alternator. Last time it was changed they must have used a pry bar to tension it and tightened it in place. Broke a mounting bolt in the process. I will report if my problems go away tomorrow. Rusty bolts on San Francisco cars are a *****
