Default windshield wiper flip-out

I thought Lexus thought of everything during the design but for my 2001 ES, the windshield wiper does not clear the hood edge when I try to flip it out for cleaning or replacement of blade. I can push the wiper assembly about a quarter of an inch and it will clear the hood. In fact, if the wipers are in a flipped-out state and the wipers are turned on (after a car wash, for instance), the wiper will jam against the hood edge and flip back into wiping position. The previous owner must have done this about ten times because there are gouge marks on the hood edge that is still present from wiper assembly being forceabley pushed about a quarter of an inch. Are there any other 2001 ES owners out there that see the same inadequecy on their ES? Can it be fixed?

What are you talking about??

On both my 97 ES300 and 2006 ES330, the wiper arms can be adjusted so that they are in 2 different positions when in the "off" state.

When it is winter or time to change my wiper blade, I pull the wiper arms parallel to the windshield towards the sky. It would click into position. Then I can flip the arms up perpendicular to the windshield.

Best to pull up on the passenger side. Just grab the arm, not the wiper and pull upfollowing the curve of the windshield, till it "clunks" into to uppoer position. This is also designed as "winter mode", so snow and ice won't pack under the wiper blade and so the blad is warmed by the defroster. Takes a bit of courage the first time as you will be certain you are breaking something.
