so my gas tank cover/flap is broken... '97
this is very annoying. my gas tank cover won't open when i press the button anymore. i think something is wrong with the spring or something along those lines.
the only way to open it is to have someone else push the left of the gas tank while i hold the button to pry it open. when i'm alone i have one finger pressing the button, and my foot is trying to pry open the gas cover. haha it's pretty akward and i really need to get it fixed.
has this happened to anyone else? where should i go?
thanks!

there is a gas-door-release-cord , accesible from the trunk, that pops it open properly in the event of an electrical problem. no need to use screwdrivers or anything else.
what i do is press the trunk button then the gas button and that makes it work for some reason [probably related to voltage drops from old wiring etc].
usually, it works though because i know how to press it, even though previous owner couldn't do it without pressing trunk first. :> I have a magic touch, 95% of the time with it : )

I had this same thing happen to my 98. It was a broken spring, so I used a metal clip from a bar that held sockets (Sears, 3/8" socket organizer). It works perfectly. Whatever you use, you'll need something that is under pressure when the gas door is closed so that when you hit the button and the rod slides out the door pops open.

By accident i broke off the clip that held the cover together, so to avoid any other problems with the button not working what i did was grabbed 2 small earth magnets (_) about that size and just super glued one to the cover and the other to the mount. The button no longer serves a purpose and all i gotta do to open it is just pop it up. The magnets were small enough that the cover still sits flush with my car. Works great for me dont know if you might wanna give it a try.
