Default 2000 es300 car not starting sometimes (already checked alternator and battery)

Hey guys,

Here's the issue, it does this once in a while, but it's really annoying. The car does not start. The key is in the ignition and when turning, nothing happens. Even though the dashboard lights up, absolutely nothing happens when it is turned.

I had autozone check the alternator and the battery (new battery of 4 months), with positive results.

Mechanic informed me to step on the gas a few times and then start the ignition. That works sometimes, but usually doesn't.

Could it be the starter? Anyone else have this problem or has experienced this? Your input is greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Bryan

Does it click when you turn the key? or does it try to crank up but just not turn over? It could possibly be that it's not getting any fuel. Can you hear the fuel pump start up when you turn the key to the on position? My ES has never had this problem but my SC has some fuel pump / fp ecu issues and doesn't always like to start.

At the crank, when it does not start the car, there is no sound of any kind. The key is turned and nothing happens. When you refer the fuel pump sound, how is it supposed to sound? thx

It is a low humming or 'wooshing' sound that comes from behind/under the rear seat. It's pretty noisy on my 92 ES which has almost 180k so it is probably on the way out, on yours it won't be all that loud but definitely audible. As long as it is completely quiet outside though you should be able to hear the pump kick on when you turn the key to on.

But if it was that the engine would still try to turn over, it just wouldn't get any fuel. Sounds like your problem is something electrical. The starter is a likely culprit, I would get that checked out first.

The fuel pump only turns on when the key is turned to START. Make sure your battery cables are in good shape and tight (no corrosion); then check for power at the starter. You can also unlock the shift lock and try starting it in neutral.

I would have the starter tested or unplug the wire from the starter and you could jump the terminal from the main batt pos wire with a jumper wire at the starter to test it...

Default Same Problem on RX330

Hello,
I have the same problem on my 2005 RX (sorry for the cross-post), and I would be happy to hear about any potential solutions. I have tried the following:

1. New keys
2. New fuse block
3. New shift neutral switch
4. (2) new computers

I am at a point, where no one wants to drive the car in case it doesn't want to start while we are far from the dealership. I am wondering if I am up for a complete wiring harness next.

Cheers

Sound like the problem I am having also. I found if I leave the car for about 5- 10 minutes it will start. Secondly, if I do a few short turns of the key quickly, it starts. If you find the solution please post it. I will do the same.

i was having an issue with my 93 es300 where it would not start sometimes and it turned out to be the speed sensor, im not sure if this is the issue you are having but i tested mine by heating the speed sensor up with a heat gun or hair dryer and it craked up everytime easy thing to check. my speed sensor is located in the distributor so i have to replace the whole distributor but im not sure where you alls is located. hope it helps. i had a hell of a time figuring out my issue.

It turned out to be the Starter contacts. I got the parts from www.startercontacts.com/. The car works fine now.

Definitely sounds like a starter contacts issue - InsideLine had the same problem with their 1996 ES300. Just so you know, the fuel pump does not energize with the key in the ON position, it only comes on during cranking, but I believe that's what 92ES5sp meant when he mentioned the START position.

I got the parts I needed for the starter by e-mailing larrybuckinc@gmail.com and giving him the car make and model.
