How many miles do you get with a full tank of gas?
Hey all. I am a bit disappointed in the gas mileage of my '01 ES. On a completely FULL gas tank, I got a hair over 260 miles before I had to fill it up again. If it's true that these cars have 18 gallon tanks, then that roughly equates to 14.4 miles per gallon!!!! Disgrace! And though I may be guilty OCCASIONALLY of stepping on the gas, I don't care if you set the cruise control at 105mph, you should get better then 14.4 mpg. Just curious as to what the rest of you get on a Full tank. Perhaps there is something wrong with mine.
BTW, I use only 93 octane.
Thanks.

Okay let's start with the tires...are they inflated properly? Are you driving city or hwy or mixed? Do you accelerate normally not exceeding 3k on the tach for shifts? There are alot of small things that contribute to your mileage.
Ythe ES has 18.5 gals but you'll never use all of it unless you run out of gas. Have you ever checked your calculations? How far are you driving going 260mi to one tank? Are you dividing up the miles driven by the amount of gas you've used up? There's alot of factors that add in here. As you said, you are guilty of gunning it from time to time...so that's gonna kill your mileage regardless. If you do mostly city driving and your driving habits are gunning it from time to time, you will get poor fuel economy...regardless of what octane you use.
Miles Driven/Gallons Filled = MPG

Italia, on my '01 ES, I usually drive in the range of 360-385 miles per tank before the fuel warning light is on. That equates to approximately 23.5 to 25.5 MPG for mixed driving (I've gotten as much as 27.5 MPG on 75-90% highway driving). I fill up with 87 octane now (used to do mid-grade or 93 octane), and I often have the A/C turned on.
260 miles before filling up the gas tank is unreasonably low for the ES. Follow flipside's comments and see where the fault of your reduced gas mileage might lie within. I would also consider adding fuel injector cleaner fluid into your tank to clean out your dirty fuel injectors and hopefully get better gas mileage. You can purchase this kind of fluid at Wal-mart or any auto parts store. Get the Chevron w/ Techron concentrate if you can; it's the most recommended by a majority of us in this forum. Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys. Most of my miles are city miles, with a few hwy miles thrown in. I would say I accelerate "normally" about 75% of the time. All of my tires are set at 34 PSI. To double check my calculations; when I filled up yesterday, after driving 260 miles on the previous tank, It filled up after only 15 gallons of gas. So if the tank hold 18.5, that means there was 3.5 gallons still sitting in there. Ok, so that means I managed to get 260 miles out of 15 gallons of gas then. That's still only 17.3 mpg. Better then 14, but I guess I was hoping for better. I will try some Fuel Injector cleaner like those suggested, and attempt be more conscious of my driving behavior and see if that helps some. Thanks for the suggestions!

I never fill before 400 miles. Also I drive like a granny. I thought the capacity for my 98 was about 15 gallons anyway being that thats all Ive ever been able to get in there, even when driving for a while with the light on.

One my trip to Florida during my honeymoon, I got 485 miles & still had I'd say 25 - 30 miles to go before I got nervous. I was doing roughly 65 - 70 MPH on average.

Have you got oversized wheels and tires on this car? They will rotate more slowly than stock ones and make the speedometer and the odometers read low. ( I have spoken about this many times on other threads). The larger and farther from stock they are, the lower the odometer will read.
Other factors not yet mentioned that can affect mileage are;
Bad wheel alignment.....especially excessive toe-in or toe-out. This puts extra drag on the car.
Clean any extra or unneccessary junk out of the trunk...extra weight affects mileage.
Have the oxygen, MAF, TPS, sensors and the computer spark timing checked...all of these can affect mileage. So can worn spark plugs.
What kind of terrain are you driving on?....going up steep hills, obviously, lowers mileage.
Does the tranny feel like it is slipping? Late-model ES'es are notorious for vague transmission response...part of the drive-by-wire system. But if it is truly slipping....that will waste gas too.
Pinhole leaks in the fuel tank or fuel lines from rust, corrosion, or bad clamps...have those checked.
Good Luck
