Default Planned Nonoperational vehicle (California)

hey guys,

Just curious, if a vehicle is deemed planned nonoperational and is driven down the street just to get the fluids flowing for a short period of time twice a month, what would the penalty be if a cop pulled the driver over (for whatever reason it may be) and the car was planned nonoperational?

Thanks!

Yup. You'll pay the registration and depending how long any associated fees. Including smog, insurance... I used to do that for the Celica but only down our residential street. Wasn't enough to truly circulate the fluids and as the car aged, other issues prevented me from keeping the fluids circulating.

The planned non-op, there will not be the usual colored annual registration tag. That color will stand out. The way Murphy goes, it happens sooner than expected. Get a big truck, trailer transport and drive the car on private property or race track.

The neighbor down from us has taken his Formula Ford down the street a few times.

this. full penalties for driving without registration/insurance including back-registration since you started driving it. Best to keep it running/in the system unless you're no longer able to.

sup B?

I was going to, but not anymore since I'm only saving $40.00. haha.

Annant,

Was just going to make it non operational since I don't drive the car (I moved and the car is just parked at my parents). I will just have to find a way to drive it more when I visit. haha.

I thought I would point out my experiences in doing things the right way.

You can head down to the DMV (or AAA if you are a member) and request a "Vehicle Moving Permit".

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk...and_decals.pdf

Starts on page 2 with all the details and rules so you know how to present yourself.

I have stopped into AAA to do this many times and I am out within 5 minutes. They have been nice enough to even give me paperwork for a couple days instead of a single day.

Hope this helps!

yeah but doing it weekly just to keep the car running for an otherwise perfectly running vehicle is a waste of time.
