Don't worry about what the other guy told his insurance company. Just give a truthful statement of what happened. Since you were rear-ended, he is at fault. California sees it that way regardless of circumstances. I had a guy pull a swoop and squat on me where he cut me off and slammed on the brakes. I almost made the stop, but tapped his rear bumper and CA and the insurance companies ruled it was my fault. Good luck.

I would definitely go to a lawyer asap and have them help you nail this idiot for everything that he has

I don't think he needs a lawyer unless he wants to sue for personal injury. This is cut and dry in CA.

Sorry that happened to you! Glad to see you are alright. In addition to what everyone else has advised, make sure to take detailed notes of everything. Name and badge numbers of the officers, date/time/name/etc. of insurance agents, claims adjusters, etc. If you have aftermarket stuff on your car, make a spreadsheet (if you don't already have one) with all the stuff you've done as well as all receipts you can find. Also, get a spreadsheet or list of maintainence and a file of all the maintainence done. The last two are just in case they decide to 'total' the car. You can use this as negotiations to get more than what they offer you for your car because of the accessories and maintainence if you are not happy with the offer. Good luck.

It turned out that after CHP told me to leave the scene, the officer arrested my assailant for DUI. He spent the night in jail. Which makes a lot of sense. The freeway was completely empty and somehow, he hit me!

According to my lawyer, no matter what he says, his testimony will not hold any weight in court.

My car is back from Longo, looking better than when I first bought it. The guys at Longo went to town shining up my wheels. I can see my reflection in those beauties. Total cost of repairs: $14831.

I had to shell out $500 for my deductible but my lawyer says that I will get it back, as well as the cost of my rental car.
