Hey. Was wondering if anyone has any updated opinions on where to get my car tinted since the last reply was '11? Also wanting to get some clear paint film installed as well. Mahalos!

I've taken 3 cars to Tint Zone auto center in Kalihi and they have been great. Fast and will fix things you're not satisfied with. From others' experiences, I've heard good things about Protint (Kalihi) and Al's Tinting (Aiea)

+1 on tint zone. did two cars there when my friend's brother in law was working there. owner is nice and work was done well. my only issue was that they were using a higher percentage tint on the second car i did. the owner said that too many people were coming back to him saying they weren't passing safety check. so he started using 40% so that he guaranteed that it would pass. would have been nice to know this ahead of time so i could shop around first. this was a few years ago, so you should ask what % they plan to use if you go to tint zone.
i also went to first class tint on keeaumoku. they put darkest legal tint they had. it looked nice but my wife couldn't pass safety at the honda dealership (it was a percent or two below the lowest threshold. is it 26%?). when my wife went back to first class tint, they told her they wouldn't re-tint it to a higher percent tint (for free since it was a lifetime warrant) and to go to other gas stations to try and pass. after two fails at gas stations, she ended up going to tint zone for the 40% tint...

The threshold for passenger car windows and front windows of suvs, vans, xcab trucks is 29%.
When I had my car done at Tintzone a year ago, I had them try samples of a couple of films and light meter it on my car. I went with a 35% film that metered out to 30-31%. This is the best way to do it if the shop will take the time to do this.
Films will meter out differently on different makes, models due to if there is any very, very slight tint in the oem glass or the varying levels of glass clarity from manufacturing tolerances. To give an extreme example, when I did my front windshield at TnT tinting, they told me they've run into a couple situations where there's 2 same model, year cars and one passed the windshield 70% and the other didn't. Strange...and gotta be frustrating for that owner. Note for the windshield there is no tolerance, 70% is it

Al's is the only way, Best work, guaranteed. I've seen some pretty bad things come from other shops. Pricey but we all have Lexus' and why would you put anything less than the best on them?
Also lifetime warranty. I had T&T's "formula one" on my GS300 and while it was good, it wasn't as good as what Al had, tested it with the heat lamp and I can say with confidence that it's the best there is, good protection, best heat reduction and lifetime warranty. No questions asked. (just save your paperwork)
I'm **** about my cars and I only take my vehicles to Al's, check their reviews on yelp. (plus they take the panels off and quarter windows out and make sure it's done right, no cutting corners.
Hope this helps!
