I'd totally rock the hillbilly jacked up SC430 lol. I hate the SC430 so much, but this thing is just freaking awesome. I'd be curious to see a build thread on that car, see if they did it right or did it hillbilly style, aka total hack job that is completely unsafe to drive over 20mph.

That SC430 is hilarious! BTW, there is also an excerpt on 9 older Lexus models that still look great today. I was surprised not to see the original SC300/400 in that group. I think they are the most timeless design Lexus has ever offered.

Hello.
I realize this is an old thread, but I felt the need to make a correction to the article regarding the fifth image in the article of the IS300 ute.
It's actually not true that Toyota has never made a coupe utility, they've just never sold one in North America. Like the article says, Australia has a long history with the body style. As you might expect, many of Toyota's utes were built and sold there. They were based on the 1967-1971 Crown and were assembled by a local company that assembled from various manufacturers using CKD kits called Australian Motor Industries (who would later be bought out by Toyota to form the basis of their Australian division). There were also coupe utilities built by Toyota themselves based on the first generation Mark II, the first through third generation Publica, the second and third generation Corona, and the first generation bB (aka, the first generation Scion xB). It probably doesn't count since Daihatsu was not fully (or even majority) owned by Toyota at the time, but there was also the Miracab, a ute based on the second gen Mira and sold in Thailand from 1990-1995. Subaru (currently 16.5% owned by Toyota) was responsible for a pair that most of you are probably familiar with, the second gen Leone-based 1978-1993 BRAT and the third gen Legacy Outback-based 2002-2006 Baja.
Toyopet Crown Masterline Utility
Toyota, Dahatsu, and Subaru aren't the only Japanese manufacturers to put out coupe utilities by far. Nissan, Mazda, Isuzu, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi have have either put one out at some point or another, and/or somebody building one of their vehicles under license (as is the case with the Lancer-based Proton Arena/Jumbuck) made a ute version of it. Technically, both generations of the Honda Ridgeline are based on an Accord platform, so they're coupe utilities in a sense.

Among those you listed, you might also be able to include the Suzuki X90, which was a two-door "coupe" with a separate trunk and removable T-top roof panels, based on the Sidekick/Tracker platform.

Depends on how you define "utility" A "Ute" is generally considered to have AWD or 4WD, which counts out vehicles like the El Camino and Ranchero.

It's true that "ute" can mean different things, but I was referring to a specific body style. Yes, some people use it as shorthand for SUV. In Australia, it's come to mean basically any pickup, both traditional trucks like the Ford F-250 as well as coupe utilities like the Holden Commodore. The full term "coupe utility", however, is not the former and is more specific than the latter. It's a fairly safe assumption that the article was also referring to coupe utilities specifically, since Toyota and Lexus have made DOZENS of SUVs and traditional pickups over the years and the modified IS300 in question is clearly a coupe utility.
