Porsche reviving 718 name for new Boxster and Cayman (Update Post #26)

I've been wanting to pick up a Cayman for a while (I was choosing between that and an Evora 400) but it's tough at this point finding a low mileage 987 in an acceptable spec - the huge variance on options doesn't help the search. I'm spending a week with a 981 next month and pending how that goes I may just decide to pick a new one up off the lot.

Some great choices. Yeah I imagine finding a 987 in the right spec is like finding a needle in the haystack. Both 987 and 981 catch my eye, so the availability of technology would be a key factor and likely push me towards the 981, but that's just me. GL!

One thing that helps with finding a 981 GTS is that many people are starting to get their GT4 allocations, so we should be seeing a bunch of well-spec'd ones starting to hit the used market (same for the 987 Cayman R, as going from that to the GT4 is another likely progression path).
PM'd!

Speaking of increasing amenities, it appears front/rear parking sensors and backup camera are standard across the lineup on the 718 - same as the 991.2. It was only available as an option on the 981, and IIRC a backup camera was not even an option on the 991.1!

I like the looks of the 718, not sure I like the engine choices though. Seems a little weird to have a 4 cylinder but I'm sure there isn't much sacrifice for most people who will be driving them.
If I can get over not having a backseat, I'm hoping to swoop up a 987 R or 981 GTS in a year or so... The 987 R seems less likely though since given the age and production numbers.

As I mentioned, a ton of 987 R models are hitting the used market right now as their owners get their GT4 allocations and have to make garage space (or financial space). Lots of great examples available right now, some with under 10k miles. If you want a good one, I'd get one right now.

Has Porsche Killed The Cayman's Soul By Fitting A Turbo Four-Banger?
The 911 may be Weissach's staple sports car, but the Cayman has one key advantage: its mid-engined layout.
So when Porsche came around to offering a new model, it had the tough job of attempting to improve one of the best chassis in the industry without ruining the vehicle's inherent balance or detracting from the driving thrills.
It came up with the 718 Cayman. Complete with a refreshed exterior, tweaked interior and improved handling, there's no denying its greatness as a sports car. But with the adoption of a turbocharged four-cylinder, is it as fun as its predecessor?
Auto Express recently set out to answer that question by driving the current range-topping Cayman S on a tight little test track. Throwing up some interesting conclusions, this review could spark some fierce debates. So what are you waiting for, watch it already!

Is The New Porsche Cayman S Still The Best Sports Car?
Porsche’s decision to spread forced induction in its engine range has been met with lots of criticism so far, and there's a good reason for that.
Gone are the days when you could just mash the throttle on a brand new Cayman and enjoy what is considered one of the best engine notes in the market.
That’s because Porsche has replaced the old flat-six naturally aspirated engines with a pair of four-cylinder turbos that’s not only more powerful but more fuel efficient as well. The result is that a Cayman S now offers 345hp from its turbocharged 2.5-litre engine and a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in 4 seconds flat with the PDK equipped.
Sounds good right? Well, yes and no. Picking a side of the argument will require a lot of brainstorming, but the cold hard truth is that Porsche’s new entry-level two-door coupe is a lot better as a whole than it used too.
