Running BMW stolen from Linden gas station

This. It's actually very dangerous for a car to shut off by itself so no car does this. If the engine shuts off, you lose power brakes and steering and it becomes a huge liability for the manufacturer. I've actually driven a car back home after dropping someone off without the fob. She drove us there and took it with her. Only after I drove away did I realize I forgot to take it from her. The warning light stayed on but it drove perfectly fine all the way home.
Exactly. This was the problem with GM's weak ignition cylinders: weight of key could force ignition off, so power steering and power brakes were lost, driver lost control and crashed.
Better to let the driver continue driving than to risk loss of engine power suddenly, perhaps in the middle of a high-speed runway on a crowded freeway.

Gotta say...sometimes i'm guilty of that and I gotta stop doing that.
Not that I leave it running in front of a Starbucks or anything, but more like I realize I forgot something in the morning, leave it idling in the driveway, run back inside and run back out.
Would be a huge FML if some thief camped out in my quiet cul-de-sac and stole the car!

^ I've heard stories of people dropping their wife off to work, then driving 300 miles one way with the key fob still in her purse. That would be A LOT of fun if you are in the bum**** of nowhere and the nearest BMW dealer is 300 miles away back in town, and they're the only one who can make a new key for you.

Sounds like a lazily-installed remote starter (just leave a spare key in the car instead of wiring one in as an override). Every Nissan I've ever driven (and my father-in-law owns one) requires the key to be inside the cabin to start. Even if I'm standing next to it with the door open, the act of bending down to press the brake with my hand moves the fob far enough away that it won't start.
