honking alarms should be banned. Common sense should be required.

Yes if people are getting kill by the folding mirror, then they would go work on it.

Where I'm from though, this is not an option. We have the worst crime rate in South East Asia so it has become a habit for any car owner here to lock their vehicles. SOP
P.S.
@Aron9000
Interestingly, your situation is similar to Japan as a lot of Japanese car owners rarely lock their vehicles (since the crime rate their ranges from extremely low to ZERO/non-existent). Yet when those Japanese visit other countries and rent cars overseas, the culture shock sets in the moment they realize why their GPS satnav module is stolen

I grew up in a small town. When I was young, we could leave vehicles unlocked. Hell, we even left our house unlocked. While we were gone.
Times are different. I don't ever leave my car unlocked when I'm back home, nor is the house unlocked. Most of the people are still good folks, but the number of worthless drug users is increasing and thus the incidence of theft.

No, I added an aftermarket electronic beep module. The OEM honk is still there if I hit lock twice, but since the beep occurs on the first push of the button, I never have to hit lock a 2nd time.

I actually put a tape over the speaker/beeper because it was a bit too loud and high pitch. Now it's 90% similar to the Lexus beep. This module allows your parking lights to flash if you want it to, but since my car already does that from the factory, the installation was easier.
Not my car, but it sounds like this.
