Default EXCLUSIVE PROOF: The Mid-Engined Chevrolet C8 Corvette Is Happening!

Our exclusive mule sighting confirms that Chevrolet means mid-engine business.

Behold, mid-engine Corvette fans: The car you’ve waited patiently for Chevrolet to build has finally evolved beyond titillating concepts to the engineering mule revealed here. An 82-second strike by our recon op resulted in 15 frames before security narcs dropped the curtain on this black test car—with its two occupants still inside.

Don’t fret over the pointy-pickup camouflage; more attractive attire will follow. Instead take solace in a cabin hugging the front axle, ample space between the cockpit and the rear wheels for the hot parts, and this Corvette’s crouched and ready attitude.

The nose clip is from Holden's Commodore SSV (with even wider flares), while the cabin module, roof, and exterior mirrors are hand-me-downs from today’s Stingray. A Holden SSV ute’s sheetmetal wraps door to door around the heinie. The wing keeps the tail planted during high-speed runs and what could be more practical than the bumper-mounted 2-by-10 for shoving this test sled back to the garage when it breaks down? Other items of note: The fuel-filler located on the driver’s-side B-pillar and the cooling intakes located along the rocker panels.

Scaling the span between the axles using the wheels as guides (we’re estimating them at 19 inches in diameter) yields a projected wheelbase of 98.9 inches, some eight inches shorter than that of today’s Corvette. That blueprint upgrade comes from bumping the transmission from ahead of to behind the rear axle as God and Dr. Porsche intended. A tighter wheelbase quickens steering response and cinches up the turning circle. It goes without saying that at least 60 percent of this probable Corvette ZR1’s mass will be supported by the rear wheels, enhancing launch traction and *****-out braking. There are rumblings that the engine bay may eventually play host to a small, 3.5- to 4.0-liter V-8 with all the fixin’s—meaning no pushrods.

Thus far GM has issued no denials discrediting our most recent (and highly detailed) mid-engine Corvette forecasts. While there’s no fresh intel regarding launch timing, the fact that experimental hardware has left the laboratory suggests that the C8 Zora sports car is on schedule to roll into showrooms in about 20 months as a 2017 model, at which point it will be sold alongside the front-engined Corvette. Place your orders now or find yourself stuck at the back of a long delivery line.

Default Mid-Engine Corvette C8 Zora Prototype Spied?

http://www.carscoops.com/2015/01/mid...prototype.html

The rumor about GM developing a mid-ship Corvette is as old as it gets, but this time, it could be real as spies have caught a telling test-mule.

Spy shooter Chris Doane cornered a strange prototype that Car&Driver magazine believes is an engineering mule for a new mid-engine Corvette model.

It's a bizarre looking beast blending parts from Holden's Commodore SSV ute, including the front end and tail section, with the cabin section, roof, and some other elements such as the exterior mirrors from the current C7 Corvette Stingray.

C&D editor Don Sherman says that the appearance of the prototype on the road "suggests that the C8 Zora sports car is on schedule to roll into showrooms in about 20 months as a 2017 model". He adds that the mid-engine supercar won't replace the front-engine Corvette Stingray, but will be sold alongside offering a new-gen V8 with a displacement of around 4.0-liters – possibly, GM's upcoming twin-turbo V8.

You can get a better look at the test mule over at Caranddriver.

Don't like the renders but this should be a ridiculous car seeing as how the C7 is already bonkers.

Thanks for scanning and posting. I get subscriptions to paper R&T copies myself, and I read that article, but R&T hadn't put it on-line yet.

Lutz is a great guy, isn't he? I always enjoy reading his stuff. He does a column every month in R&T about car questions and answers, but, this month, instead, concentrated on why the 'Vette hasn't actually gone mid-engined yet.

Default Corvette engineer says mid-engined version is not being developed

"No such car exist"

Chevrolet Corvette engineer Tadge Juechter has announced they aren't developing a mid-engined version.

It was the 80s when rumors about a mid-engined Corvette surfaced, but these never materialized and it seems the situation won't change in the near future. In an interview with Autoline After Hours, Chevrolet Corvette engineer Tadge Juechter was asked about a mid-engined Corvette which supposedly appeared for a brief moment in a TV program, but his response was: "I'll have to check that out, because I know no such car exists."

Juechter did admit they analyzed the prospects of a mid-engined Corvette C7, but refused to go down this road because they say it would have greatly affected everyday driving comfort. We remind you that back in January, Car & Driver published some spy shots allegedly depicting a mid-engined Corvette prototype which is expected to come out in 2017 as the Zora ZR1 and will be sold alongside the current C7.

Since Tadge Juechter denied the existence of such a model, one can speculate that maybe Chevrolet is planning a mid-engined supercar positioned above the Corvette and they are trying to keep it a secret just like Ford did with the new GT.

Default Did GM Accidentally Give Us A Peek At The Mid-Engined Corvette?

During Americarna‘s recent visit to the General Motors design studio to film, the camera crew may have done us quite the favor in the process. While visiting Christine Park’s workspace, a designer at GM, the camera catches something of interest to us.

As the host is busy commentating about how Park suggests she’s working on a Chevrolet “sports car” (and says it looks quite like a Camaro), the show brushes over the real news happening here.

Beginning at the 1:21 mark, just to the right of Park hangs a design sketch board, and the vehicle on the right looks decidedly mid-engined if you ask us. A Corvette emblem also clearly adorns the design sketch, with C7-esque headlamps flanking massive wheel arches. Did we just have our first look at what GM is dreaming up for a mid-engined Corvette? It seems to be so.

We already know a mid-engined Corvette is surely under development, judging by the cleverly disguised prototype snapped running about in Michigan, wearing Holden Commodore Ute cladding. But until now, we could have only left design to our imaginations. This is the first time we have something even relevant to lay our eyes on, and a look at what the Corvette team may have up their sleeves.

The front fascia wears many wedges, and sharp design lines, akin to Corvette styling, but most definitely an elevation from where Corvette design has ever treaded. Besides this full-frontal view, side profile and rear design still are left to imagination.

We can’t imagine GM would be so naive as to leave this out in plain view, and then continue to allow cameras to roll capturing it within frame. Especially as Ed Welburn stands idly by. Maybe it’s nothing, but we’re pretty sure this really is something.
Have a look for yourself right down below.

Default Cadillac President hints at a mid-engine Corvette & Cadillac variant

Cadillac President hints at a mid-engine Corvette & Cadillac variant

Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen has seemly confirmed Chevrolet is working on a mid-engine Corvette.

In an interview with Motor Trend, the magazine asked if Cadillac was considering a high-performance sports car based on the upcoming model. However, instead of denying it's in development, de Nysschen said "It has to be one of the options that we consider." The executive went on to suggest basing a car on a "new, very advanced Corvette platform" wouldn't be a bad idea.

Despite hinting at the possibility of a Corvette-based model, de Nysschen said the company could also go in a different direction as he noted an ultra-luxurious four-door convertible would be a "good play that draws on our heritage." This, of course, is a thinly veiled hint that we could eventually see a production version of the Ciel concept which debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2011 and recently had a cameo in the Entourage movie.

Besides talking about the aforementioned models, de Nysschen said Cadillac is focused on filling gaps in their product portfolio. He also hinted the company might eventually do away with manual transmissions as their low sales volumes make them "pretty hard to keep it around."
