Default 2013 Nissan Frontier gets substantial price drop, better fuel economy

2013 Nissan Frontier gets substantial price drop, better fuel economy

With the competition dwindling (or dying) among compact trucks, Nissan is looking to make some minor changes to the 2013 Frontier to snag a few extra sales for its aging pickup. Pricing and fuel economy are probably two of the most important vehicle stats among new-car buyers, and the 2013 Nissan Frontier has made vast improvements in both areas over the 2012 model.

First things first: The MSRP of both the King Cab and Crew Cab models have dropped by $1,270 with new starting prices of $17,990 and $22,030 (*not including the $845 destination charge), respectively. The biggest price drop is seen on the SV Crew Cab 4x2, which dropped $1,450 to its new price of $23,990. The important thing here is that the 2013 Frontier King Cab is now priced just a few hundred dollars more than a regular cab version of the Toyota Tacoma. Nissan is also offering a new SV Value Truck Package that includes all the equipment of the previous SV Premium Utility Package (spray-on bedliner, Utili-Track in-bed cargo system with four adjustable cleats and Bluetooth) and adds in a rearview monitor and dual-zone air conditioning.

Another key change made for 2013 was to the Frontier's fuel economy. Except for the base-model truck (King Cab, inline-four, manual transmission, two-wheel drive), all other configurations have seen increases in city and/or highway fuel economy to the tune of one or two miles per gallon; the biggest improvement was to the V6 models with the automatic transmission, which saw an improvement of one mpg city and two mpg highway. Nissan accomplished this with better aerodynamics and updated internal engine components to reduce friction. Aero changes include a seal between the cab and bed, a tailgate spoiler and a new front chin spoiler.

Default Nissan's Cummins tie-up bears first fruit with Frontier Diesel Runner concept

The 2014 Chicago Auto Show is proving to be a surprisingly big show for alternative fuels. The Chevrolet Silverado HD pickups are getting a compressed natural gas option and the refreshed BMW X3 is receiving a diesel engine, as is the German automaker's 7 Series. You can add one more oil burner to the mix, at least in concept form: Nissan has released its Frontier Diesel Runner Powered by Cummins with a 2.8-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF.

While Nissan calls the Cummins-powered Frontier a concept, it's really just a Frontier DesertRunner 4x2 with a diesel engine replacing the standard 4.0-liter V6, and it's meant to gauge consumer interest for a diesel option in the next-generation Frontier. Nissan has clearly noticed that Chevrolet will be offering a diesel in its new Colorado and wants to see how buyers will react to a mid-size alt-fuel pickup from a Japanese brand.

Exterior modifications to the concept are minor. To show off the engine, there is a transparent hood insert and the pickup has been painted in a two-tone finish of high-gloss red and matte silver edged in carbon fiber trim. The interior gets the same combo of red, silver and carbon fiber to match the outside.

Nissan promises that the Cummins diesel produces nearly 200 horsepower and more than 350 pound-feet of torque, and fuel economy could improve by as much as 35 percent over the V6, which would equate to around about 22 miles per gallon city and 30 mpg highway. Payload and towing capacity would be roughly identical to the existing V6, says Nissan.

If it gets built, the Frontier with a Cummins diesel is still several years away. Nissan says that the engine and transmission combo will not fit in the current pickup without modification, and frankly, the current model is getting on in years. The company's current focus is launching the next-generation, full-size Titan pickup in 2015 with a 5.0-liter Cummins diesel V8 as an option. Scroll down to get all of the details in the press release.

Default Old Nissan Navara (AKA Frontier US) facelifted for Europe

Offered with three diesel engines

Nissan has refreshed the previous generation Navara for the European market.

The Asian markets already received the all-new Navara, but the outgoing model will still be offered in Europe in 2015 with some minor visual and mechanical tweaks. First, the vehicle will be available with two new body colors – bronze and grey, while the whole range gets a set of new 17-inch alloy wheels and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system as standard.

The SE and LE versions will come with new interior trims for improved look and feel. Most importantly, the SE level will be offered with a 144 HP (106 kW) modification of the 2.5-liter dCi diesel engine, first seen in the fleet-oriented XE.

All trim levels will be available with the 190 HP (140 kW) version of the same diesel unit, while the range-topping LE also has the 231 HP (170 kW) 3.0-liter V6 diesel on the list. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Default Nissan Navara Gets Salomon Limited Edition in the UK

The Nissan Navara continues in its current form in Europe, even though an all-new model was revealed in Asia last year. In the UK, the Navara even gets a new limited edition model built with the Salomon mountain sports brand.

Limited to 500 units, the Nissan Navara Salomon is based on the Tekna trim and features a series of additional equipment and styling cues that differentiate it from standard models. Exterior styling upgrades include chrome front bar, door handles and fog light surrounds, complemented by Salomon branding on the front, side and rear of the vehicle.

The Navara Salomon is available in four body colors: Metallic Black, Twilight Grey, Starburst Silver or Alabaster White. The cabin gains Salomon entry guards, a metal plaque and Salomon floor mats. Adding all these features one by one would amount to over £1,300, but the Navara Salomon costs £750 more than the equivalent Tekna model, which means the customer is saving about £550.

Prices for the Navara Salomon start from £27,845 OTR and each customer will also get a £250 voucher to spend on Salomon gear. Available optional extras include an automatic transmission (£1,755) and Nissan Connect Premium (£1,650), which includes HDD satellite navigation, 9GB Nissan Music Box, DVD playback and a rear parking camera.

The Navara Salomon is powered by a 2.5-liter 190PS (187hp) turbo diesel engine, which means it’s capable of towing items up to 2,600 kg (5,732 lbs).
