First Drive: 2014 Acura RLX

if they want to target 5 series and E-class they need to spend some money and build RWD cars.

It's simple, there are too many better sedans in this price range, very few buyers would even consider the RLX.
I would get a Ultra Lux ES over this if I want a FWD comfort cruiser,
I would get a GS350 loaded, and still have money left for a set of nice wheels.
Hell, I would even get a Hyundai Equus if I want space ,RWD, and luxury for cheap.

forget about comparing this to others, it has no chance. funny thing is the new RLX will even lose sales to the current TL SH-AWD. i can get a brand new 2013 TL SH-AWD (3.7L V6 with 305 hp) with technology package for under 40k, is the new FWD RLX worth 15K more? i don't think so.

Acura should change their target to bring back the sporty hatchbacks and coupes, RSX and CL replacements. they won't have any competition if they reinvent those two models. Acura should just carry the following models:
RSX replacement (Civic SI motor, with sportier suspension and more luxury interior while keeping the weight in check)
ILX minus the hybrid model (for RSX buyers who need a four door)
CL coupe replacement (3.5L DI V6 without VCM, with 6 speed auto/manual, sportier suspension than V6 Accord coupe)
the new TSX (CL buyers who need a four door)
RDX and MDX

Acura brought an E and 5 for reasons no one knows b/c no one cross shops Acura with real luxury brands. This has been restated by data over and over the last 10 years. They don't even know their target market, they have none. There is no market for the RLX or RL since 1996, the yearly worst seller in class most years. It never meets sales goals. Young people don't even know it exists nor older people.

Drury points to Edmunds.com data showing that about 21% of people who consider an Acura also look at Toyota; nearly 19% cross-shop Hondas. Further, fewer than 13% of people looking at Audi also consider Acura, and about 17% of Infiniti shoppers cross-shop Acuras. Meanwhile, about 30% of people who consider an Audi also look at a BMW.
In other words, car shoppers seem more inclined to consider Toyotas and Hondas — not Audis and Infinitis — as the equivalent of Acuras. "There is a bit of questioning as to where (Acura's) exact competition lives," Drury says.

This car offers NO VALUE for its price, you are getting a lesser FWD car with technology everyone else had years ago. Why does it cost so much? For a bigger backseat? Lol.
The GS needed a big boost with the 4th gen and they got it right, sales show it, its best handling in class, maybe best interior in class, it has elevated Lexus. Lexus did their HW to make sure the 4GS was a knock-out. Acura repeats history then a handful of fans who don't get it blame everything else but Honda or say "oh it will be a great by in 2 years when its 15k". Well that only hurts Acura. These reviews are average at best, they are not overflowing with praise for being good looking, great driving, a great buy etc. Its not being the most luxurious, the most sporty, the cheapest, the best looking. Its MIDDLE again in a very hot segment. Acura cannot afford to be middle.
Good luck selling a 50-60k FWD RLX and a 60-70k AWD RLX that looks just like an Accord.

Pretty funny buScott Oldham an editor of Edmunds.com, sent this tweet on the RLX:
I think I've been driving a 2014 @Acura_Insider #RLX for the last two days, but I can't remember. And that's my review.
The more things change, the more they stay the same with Acura.
I'm also glad Motorweek pointed out that all the new tech in the RLX has been around for sometimes now. Its always perplexing to see people say "Acura has technology" or "Acura has all this tech" and well, they don't. Guess they are not enthusiasts.
