Volvo admits the R-Design’s transmission is a weak spot. The six-speed automatic constantly hunts for higher gears when set to drive or sport mode, theoretically to save fuel.

No I am not blind, nor am I illiterate. A quick check of the spec sheet is all one needs:
If you further check the options list, there are no configurable transmission options. Six-speed Auto is standard, and there is no other choice. They may offer a manual in other countries, but as you and I are both in the US (at least according to your profile), the US config is the only thing that matters.
I was actually considering the S60R to replace my old E46 until discovering that there was no manual option, so believe me, I've quite thoroughly researched this.

Fair enough, I did not note that he was looking at the first generation, and was incorrect about "never having been" offered. However, the current model most definitely does not:

Ive always looked at these but like others have said i was never able to pull the trigger and get one. Reliability always came into question for me - also not knowing many people who have had a volvo to provide feedback. instead i went with the G35x perviously.

Yes. This has been a great car for me and my family. I have had no problems, just make sure the one you get has all records as usual. Get an 06 or 07 only as they have the stronger tranny's manual and auto. I always get complements its a great car. I now have 80k miles on mine and will be selling my speed 3 to get an suv soon. No way I sell the R. 5 cylynder sound is like heaven. The R also has the same engine that's in the Focus RS. Head over to the Sweedspeed forums for more info on the R.

Lexmenow, thanks for the tip. I'd only get the 6spd manual trans, glad you haven't had any issies w/ yours yet. Had no idea the S60 and Focus RS share the same engine, not cool lol hopefully I can get behind the wheel of one soon and finally see what the R is all about. Always was into "different" cars w/ character that make a statement so I'll see what happens.

There is a wagon version of this car. It's called the V70R which came with a 296hp engine and both the 6spd manual and 6spd auto. There beautiful cars. A friend of mine's is thinking about getting one as a family car to go along with his Evo 8.
