Today they revealed a shot of the Carbon Fiber Monocoque.
This load-bearing structure of the vehicle is engineered as a “single shell” that functions physically as one component, thus taking full advantage of the extreme rigidity of carbon fiber. Formula 1 race cars have been built using this technique for many years--and have proven their crash worthiness time and again.
Not only is this design very safe, it’s also very light. In this case, the LP700-4’s monocoque weighs in at just 324 pounds.
The monocoque is connected at the front and rear with rigid aluminum sub-frames, on which the suspension, engine and transmission are mounted. The entire body-in-white (the body with no moving parts, trim, powertrain or chassis components) of the new V-12 supercar weighs only 505 pounds and boasts a torsional rigidity of 35,000 Newton meters per degree of twist.
Lamborghini is also boasting about developing its carbon fiber components completely in-house. The automaker uses three main techniques for manufacturing the lightweight components: Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), Prepreg and Braiding. The release of the new ‘Murcielago’ officially named Aventador is still a few months away. Ahead of its official debut at Geneva 2011 Lamborghini revealed today their new V12 powerplant and ISR transmission. The twelve-cylinder with 6.5 liter displacement, output of 700hp (525kW) and maximum torque of 690 Newton meters available at 5,500rpm is accompanied by the ISR automated manual gearbox.
The gearbox combines minimal shift times – almost 50 percent shorter than with a dual-clutch transmission – and everyday usability with low weight and dimensions. The new powertrain will enter production early 2011. Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini stated:
The resulting package is powerful and high-revving, yet compact. At 235 kilograms, it is also lightweight – with every single kilo of engine weight representing around three hp of maximum output. Not only was it developed entirely in-house by Lamborghini, it is also manufactured from start to finish at company headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
Lamborghini ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) is a brand new technique for the Italian supercar builder. Instead of taking place in series, as with a conventional gearbox, shifting can occur virtually in parallel. While one shifting rod is moving out of one gear, the second shifting rod can already engage the next. Moreover, the transmission weighs only 79 kilograms – a distinct benefit, even against comparable DSG transmissions, which are considerably heavier.

The first pic came from Evo Magazine Croatia, and this second pic is via Jalopnik, which doesn’t name a source.
Taking design inspiration from the Reventon, with a rear end inspired from the Estoque sedan, the successor to the Murcielago is powered by a 6.5-liter V12 rated at roughly 690-hp. It will be 18 percent more powerful than the Murcielago, while also emitting 20 percent fewer emissions. As for the transmission, Lamborghini will make use of its new ISR 7-speed transmission – the first use of a 7-speed with a V12 in the industry. With five gear settings, (auto strada, auto sport, strada, sport and corsa) the innovative transmission will be able to deliver shift times of just 50 ms in Corsa – which is almost as quick as a Formula 1 car.
Weight is kept to a minimum thanks to a carbon fiber chassis and the LP700-4 will get a pushrod suspension setup, similar to those found on race cars.
As for the rest of the car, it will be more ergonomic than even the Gallardo, with space for larger drivers. The dash will feature a new TFT instrument cluster, meaning that it won’t have traditional physical gauges, but that all instrumentation will be displayed on a screen.

This new Lambo is basically a tone down Reventon for a third of the price.
