It's been a long while since we've seen any sightings of Subaru's version of the FT-86. The last time was this video and photo. But this time the Subaru FT-86 has been spotted testing in the US Southwest! And it appears to be the STi version
This test car is still wearing the bizarre bodywork spotted on the previous test mules, but the one main visual difference is the prominent hood bump. Normally that would be to clearance a top-mounted intercooler, or a supercharger, but we're pretty sure we can see a front-mounted intercooler peaking out from the lower fascia opening. This is likely the STI-spec powertrain/chassis mule!

This is a Toyota and Subaru partnership. I love it. My WRX is a total blast to drive and I hope this car comes to fruition. I don't know why Toyota/Lexus enthusiasts don't like Subaru enthusiasts but that is what I have gathered by browsing through this forum. I think this car will hopefully change some attitudes.

the SVX was a RWD Subaru. I donno why people don't like the fact Subaru are sharing with Toyota. Toyota owns a major part of Fuji Heavy which is Subaru's parent company. They are both a Toyota product. The differences will be pretty significant. The Subaru will drive like a subaru, the Toyota will drive a bit differently. They're leaving tuning to Subaru because of the use of the boxer engine. There's nothing wrong with that. This will be smaller than a WRX and just as strong, whats not to love?

Here is what it is probably going to look like.

Interesting. I wonder what it will do performance wise.

I didn't mean RWD for the SVX, I meant FWD! That was a big dummy comment there! What I mean was that the SVX wasn't AWD in some cases, so it's not like they ONLY make AWD cars. Currently yeah, but a good RWD coupe is always welcome. Anyone remember the 22B? Even though is wasn't really available over in the U.S.

Just read that Car and Driver article and they are pretty harsh on Toyota. I hope Akio Toyoda wins this battle and brings back an affordable Toyota race car.
From the article.
Aside from the recently revamped Scion tC, the $59,885 Lexus IS F, and the $375,000 Lexus LFA, Toyota’s cupboard is embarrassingly bare for buyers who actually like driving. Now that Toyota has quit wasting millions on Formula 1, there should be some money in the kitty for reaching enthusiast buyers with actual affordable product. If Akio Toyoda has any pull in the company—he should, he’s the grandson of company founder Kiichiro Toyoda and the driving force behind both the IS F and LFA—things are about to change. (Hopefully soon—we’re getting a little bored of waiting for this car.)

Toyota didn't waste money on F1. They wasted money on lame drivers and had no direction. The IS-F isn't the only sporty car besides the LFA and Tc. C&D are BMW biased anyway. The regular IS has optional sport parts, the Camry SE does also. Toyota is richer than almost every automaker, they could spend money on F1 LeMans FIA GT SuperGT Nascar Drag Racing WRC; hell they could be in every major autosport and still not lose money. I'm betting there are sports cars in the wings at Toyota. Akio is just waiting for the right time and the market position to release them
