Lightbulb Numbers

Our fearless Editor-in-Chief is off galavanting around the Northeast on vacation, so I've been tasked with coming up with this month's By The Numbers. Since I'm more obsessed with driving than number-crunching, there's a good chance I screwed this up. I'm sure you'll let me know, so let's just get this party started...

Porsche was June's biggest winner, with a whopping 137% increase in sales compared to 2009. Not a single automaker came close to that triple-digit figure, but Jaguar took the number two slot with an increase of nearly 73%, undoubtedly helped by the release of the all-new XJ. Dodge's continued success has extended through the first half of the year, while Buick shows signs of life with a 53% increase in sales compared to the previous year.

With Hummer, Saturn and Pontiac all going the way of the dodo, General Motors' zombie brands fared predictably poorly in June, although Mercury continues to soldier along with a 26% increase compared to June 2009, despite Ford's announcement that the badge-engineered brand will cease to exist this time next year.

Also, this is one of the first months that Saab Spyker Automobile has begun reporting sales, so from here on, we'll combine last year's Saab sales (under GM ownership) with this year's sales (under the Spyker regime).

Check out the full breakdown below and compare previous sales data by checking out our BTN archives – if you're into that sorta thing.

Post Top 10

Honda’s CR-V kicked the Nissan Altima off of the top 10 list for June, and while the Hyundai Sonata didn’t match last month’s levels, it did move up a slot as overall industry sales leveled off.

Compared to last month, all of the best sellers lost some momentum – figures reflected in the overall market’s modest 14 percent gain compared to June of 2009. The top six cars remained the same, while the Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu jostled positions.

The Sonata is the first Korean car to break into the ninth monthly sales position.
1. Ford F-Series - 46,502
2. Chevrolet Silverado – 30,994
3. Toyota Camry – 28,435
4. Honda Civic – 27,069 (includes coupe)
5. Honda Accord – 24,944 (does not include Accord Crosstour)
6. Toyota Corolla – 21,876
7. Chevrolet Malibu – 20,720
8. Ford Fusion - 18,412
9. Hyundai Sonata - 17,771
10. Honda CR-V - 16,041

Okay my monthly analysis...

I am going to start with Lexus. While they were up 3% I believe all the negative news is coming into play and they need to start some damn closure on it.

HS is a hot mess. It already wasn't meeting sales goals and the recall won't help.
LS and Panamera were tied in sales
ES huge dip from last month.
IS holding strong
GS not bad considering no updates and its on its way out
GX on target to meet 14k sales goal
RX just amazing
LX increased

The VW CC is really doing a great job for VW, launched about the same time as the Genesis and beating it sales most every month.

Taurus, Maxima, Lacrosse all doing good numbers.

People LOVE the C-class, its only 1500 units shy of the 3 series in SEDAN ONLY. Quite amazing.

3 series just amazing

The $319/$339 lease on G37 sedan/coupes gave it a huge jump

TL is one of the biggest failures and biggest fall from graces we have seen. Acura has 0% everything now sign and drive and sales DROPPED.

E class is amazing.

5 series will get higher as the new model debuts this month

Infinit M37/56 is really not doing well considering its an all new model.

Caddy needs to realize people prefer the DTS to STS

7 series huge jump, I believe the 6 cylinder 740 has hit dealers.

Q5 is the dominant cute-ute.

RDX fwd model has helped with sales

EX is an awful failure

Enclave solid month in and out

MDX is fine, the beak can be ignored

SRX continues to be solid

X5 doing fantastic

Lets think about it. The BMW X6 outsold the FX and the knock-off ZitDX. The FX is a huge failure, ZDX even bigger. X6 looks like genius.

G37 and A5 are fighting for top luxury coupe spot. Good fight!

Mustang and Camaro is a good fight.

Going further

Lexus has BMW and Benz aiming for them! Going to be an interesting sales year....recalls are hurting Lexus and BMW has new products and Benz is selling solid.

Lincoln has completely fallen off the map. All gains made last year have been lost. What a mess.

Infiniti better pray the G37 re-do is loved by consumers. Over 5,000 of their 8,000 sales were from that model alone. Again might as well call the brand the G37.

Acura has 0% everything sign and drive and it helped sales now but simply will hurt resale, image, residuals. They are trying their best to stop the bleeding.

Porsche with a huge bump, the Panamera is just amazing so far in sales especially considering THE MSRP!

Audi has now solidly overtaken Infiniti in sales as I predicted. Don't expect much more volume from them though.

Buick and Caddy are doing very well. Regal sales will only help Buick as production ramps up.

Some thoughts...

Very odd that the outgoing last gen Corolla was beating the then much newer Civic in its last year. Now, the new Corolla which is 10X better than the last trails the now 5 year old Civic. Who knows.

Camry is in its 5th year. Neither recalls nor age can stop the Camry. Amazing.

I'm very surprised that the Malibu is outpacing the Fusion. The Fusion is arguably the better car. And Ford altogether is just doing better than GM perhaps most likely do to not taking bailout funds.

Congrats to Hyundai for finally breaking the US's top 10. That's huge.

CR-V sales continue to amaze. Technically, it's a vehicle that is "just right" in so many ways (if you've driven one, you know). Size, drivability, versatility, quality, is all great. The one downside? Arguably the unconventional front end looks.

You do realize the "new" Corolla isn't actually new. It's just a minor facelift MMC or rather an extension of the "old" model circa 2002. In fact, the "new" facelift has been around globally since 2006 before it reached American shores here in 2008.

Post For the Year

The Corolla still leads for the year:
Corolla: 140,501
Civic: 133,601
While on topic, Cars.com just did a comparo where: 1. Civic 2. Sentra 3. Corolla (had no idea this used a 4 speed auto)

The article is in tables so I could not copy & paste the whole thing so please click the link to view it in its entirety

Editors' choice
The Civic is a perennial best-seller, and after driving the 2010, we know why. It combines good to above-average performance in many areas with a high level of quality.

With the exception of the steering-wheel reach, the Sentra is a comfortable and versatile compact.

The Corolla is a perennial best-seller, and after driving the 2010 version, we don't know why. For a generation that's a year old, the Corolla seems woefully uncompetitive.

Huh?? Where's that info from?

The current model is the 10th generation, the last gen introduced in the US as a 2003 model was the 9th generation. The current model is a complete redesign of the last generation. Even it's dimensions are all different. You claim a "minor" facelift which is generally a newly restyled grill and maybe a change in headlights or tail lights. The new Corolla is a totally different car. Well beyond what would be even a "major" facelift. Drive each one, ad you'll think you're in two different brands.

That said, most would agree that Toyota didn't go far enough with this redesign. The next one, should certainly be a bigger leap forward to go against the next Focus and Civic.

Yeah the Corollas is all new. The funny thing is they pushed the model back as they saw the styling of the Civic and tried to make the Corolla more interesting.

Now the next Civic is being pushed back for a multitude of reasons.

Both will have their work cut out as the competition has gotten much better here.

China

ORIHIKO SHIROUZU

BEIJING—Auto sales in China continued to rise in June, though at a slower pace than in previous months, which some analysts said could mean a cooling market later this year.

Sales by Toyota Motor Corp., which has been hurt by quality troubles this year, rose a relatively modest 7.7% in June from a year earlier to 60,900 vehicles, a company spokesman in Beijing said Monday. The growth rate for the month was much slower than earlier this year, as the company's first-half sales totaled 362,300 vehicles, up 27% from a year earlier.

On Monday, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said the Japanese auto maker will recall 5,791 imported Lexus luxury vehicles in China starting July 19 as part of a global recall to repair problems that could cause engines to stall.

Nissan Motor Co.'s June China sales rose 30% to 58,151 vehicles, according to a company spokesman in Beijing. The Japanese company's first-half sales totaled 330,573 vehicles, up 47%.

Analysts said the small-car-purchase tax cut and other stimulus policies implemented amid the global financial crisis seem to have pulled purchases forward, resulting in the recent slowdown in sales.

"Sales aren't all that bad," said Toyota spokesman Hitoshi Yokoyama, though he added that orders and traffic at dealerships have slowed.

Auto retailers in major markets such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu are reporting having an increasingly tough time selling cars, analysts said. Buyers previously paid premiums to get their hands on hot-selling cars, but now some dealers say they are offering discounts and other incentives to boost sales.

Yale Zhang, a Shanghai-based analyst with consulting firm IHS Automotive, said some dealers in markets such as Chengdu are already holding four weeks' to six weeks' worth of inventory, which Mr. Zhang said points to the "possibility that auto sales in China may be headed for a cool-down period."

On Friday, General Motors Co. of the U.S. said sales by its joint ventures in China rose 23% in June to 176,486 vehicles. For the first half, sales rose 49% to 1,209,138 vehicles.

In the face of concerns about a significant slowdown in sales later this year, Beijing announced a plan last month to provide subsidies of 3,000 yuan ($440) a car for purchases of certain fuel-efficient vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines.

The subsidy plan comes after China reversed plummeting auto sales last year with measures such as a purchase-tax cut for smaller-engine vehicles. Those policies continued this year with some modifications. The purchase-tax cut, for example, was reinstated at 7.5%, down from the 10% tax cut offered last year.

Auto-industry executives said the new subsidies effectively reinstate the full tax cut.

Ford Motor Co. of the U.S. said Monday it sold a record 301,524 vehicles in China in the first half, up 53% because of robust demand for fuel-efficient cars and rapid growth at its commercial-vehicle venture.

Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Co., a three-way joint venture between Ford, Changan Automobile (Group) Co. of China and Mazda Motor Corp. of Japan, had first-half sales of 205,563 vehicles, up 46%, Ford said. The company didn't provide sales data for June.

Ford said first-half sales of its Ford Fiesta compact model more than doubled to 38,669 vehicles. Ford introduced the Fiesta in China last year.

Agreed, although they are recalling for multiple issues, even if the chance of problems is low, so I expect to still hear further recall news for at least this year. Plus the attendant media publicity will continue for at least some time. At this point it is out of the PR/branding hands and related to the production/business side.

GX on target to meet 14k sales goal
RX just amazing
LX increased
Panamera doing pretty well--LS probably sold only 2/3s the month due to the VGRS software update/stop sale. HS having gone through its first recall, and now second, definitely could use some help. GX seems to be solid though despite the recall. RX, IS, and ES still keeping the lights on.

Post June Incentives

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — July 1, 2010 — Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information, estimated today that the average automotive manufacturer incentive in the U.S. was $2,661 per vehicle sold in June 2010, down $36, or 1.3 percent, from May 2010, and down $196, or 6.9 percent, from June 2009.

"Automakers are struggling right now, and most have kept incentives flat while they try to determine how to boost sales," stated Jessica Caldwell, Director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "No big incentives programs have been announced for the July 4th holiday weekend yet, and that leads me to believe that auto sales in July won't get off to a very strong start."

According to Edmunds.com, combined incentives spending for domestic manufacturers averaged $3,471 per vehicle sold in June 2010, up from $3,460 in May 2010. From May 2010 to June 2010, European automakers decreased incentives spending by $19 to $2,334 per vehicle sold; Japanese automakers decreased incentives spending by $97 to $1,895 per vehicle sold; and Korean automakers decreased incentives spending by $6 to $1,775 per vehicle sold.

Industry Average
$2,661     $2,697     $2,857
In June 2010, the industry's aggregate incentive spending is estimated to have totaled approximately $2.64 billion, down 11.1 percent from May 2010. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors spent an aggregate of $1.6 billion, or 61.3 percent of the total; Japanese manufacturers spent $704 million, or 26.7 percent; European manufacturers spent $182 million, or 6.9 percent; and Korean manufacturers spent $137 million, or 5.2 percent.

"Last June incentives were sky-high, but sales were depressed, as buyers waited for details on the Cash for Clunkers program,"
stated Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Michelle Krebs in her report on AutoObserver.com. "If the industry was truly recovering, we would be blowing last June's car sales numbers out of the water."

Among vehicle segments, large trucks had the highest average incentives, $4,631 per vehicle sold, followed by premium sport car at $3,883. Sport cars had the lowest average incentives per vehicle sold, $1,371, followed by subcompact cars at $1,393. Analysis of incentives expenditures as a percentage of average sticker price for each segment shows large trucks averaged the highest, 12.6 percent, followed by compact cars at 11.7 percent of sticker price. Premium luxury cars averaged the lowest with 2.2 percent and premium sport cars followed with 3.7 percent of sticker price.

Comparing all brands, in June Subaru spent the least, $533 followed by Scion at $565 per vehicle sold. At the other end of the spectrum, Saab spent the most, $5,843, followed by Cadillac at $5,505 per vehicle sold. Relative to their vehicle prices, Mercury and Saab spent the most, 15.5 percent and 14.5 percent of sticker price, respectively; while Subaru spent 2.1 and Porsche spent 2.1 percent.

Edmunds.com's monthly True Cost of IncentivesSM (TCISM) report takes into account all automakers' various U.S. incentives programs, including subvented interest rates and lease programs, as well as cash rebates to consumers and dealers. To ensure the greatest possible accuracy, Edmunds.com bases its calculations on sales volume, including the mix of vehicle makes and models for each month, as well as on the proportion of vehicles for which each type of incentive was used.
