Lamborghini LM series.....the Italian Hummer.
Live and learn....every day. Though it doesn't probably affect us much in 2010, I came across some interesting data as I was reading today. Back in the 1980's, when the military off-road vehicle contract was being written up to replace the famous Jeeps, a Lamborghini product was actually in the running.....the LM series. The LM002 used the gas-powered 5.2L V12 from the Countach sports car, and the LM004 used a larger 7.2L V12 with more torque (434 ft-lbs.). Its interior was similiar to the Hummer, with a huge console that blocked a lot of interior pasenger space.
However, for the American military, the contract, of course, ended up going to the cheaper Hummer/Humvee, built by AM General. I didn't know that the Lambo was in the running until I had done some reading.

I saw one a few years back. Someone I knew back in elementary school, his father had one.
I am still astonished that Lamborghini did actually build an off-roader.
I am waiting to see what Bugatti, Bentley and Rolls Royce will do if they ever venture into this market.

There used to be a Lamborghini dealership in Barrington, IL and I remember seeing a couple of them there. I just read that they only made like 300 of them - I had no idea they were that rare.
I saw one on an episode of My Classic Car and when Dennis Gauge the host was chatting with the owner, he explained how it has an aluminum & fiberglass body over a space frame. Dennis was surprised (as was I) to find that out.
Pretty interesting vehicles. If it was made in this day and age it might actually sell. A six figure, oversized vehicle is almost kinda common now!

I always thought these were first and foremost developed for the Royal Armed Forces of Saudi Arabia, which in the end turned them down to their voracious appetite for fuel (some sources say 50-60 liters for 100 km).

Thanks to the short-sightedness...or possibly just ignorance...on the part of the U.S. Army, there's actually one less of them...

On July 18, 2004, at a US military base near Baqubah, the American Military used an LM002 that had belonged to Uday Hussein to simulate the effects of a car bomb. The LM002 was destroyed during the test.

Yeah, the article mentions the connection to the Sultan, but not the fact that the U.S. military was also bidding on it. That, I found out from a book on 4WD Trucks/SUV's I was reading. I didn't see the book's website.
