Default ZAP revives hundred-year-old Detroit Electric brand

It's taken a while, but it looks like we could soon be seeing a new batch of Detroit Electrics roaming the roads, as ZAP has just announced that its reviving the hundred-year-old brand for some of its own all-electric vehicles. According to the company, those will be developed in a joint venture with the China Youngman Automotive Group, and will include the Zap Alias (pictured above), which we've seen previously under slightly more mysterious circumstances. Other details are expectedly light at the moment, but ZAP will apparently have plenty more to say about its new retro ways at the NADA 2008 auto show, which gets underway in San Francisco next week.

it has 3 wheels? i like the idea of making cars more updated, but some cars just look way to futuristic for my taste. like this one. but i like the all electric idea.

Many of these start-up manufacturers (see Aptera) are using a three-wheel platform for the simple reason they can be licensed as a motorcycle in most states and not be required to meet many of the safety standards required of a car. Of course, by eliminating the weight, complexity, and cost of a fourth wheel, and its associated suspension, brake, and differential, they can cut cost, weight, and improve performance - within certain limits.

Who knows? Maybe this is how we'll see the resurrection of many innovative and storied American automotive companies.

I got this from the motivemag bracketology -

Of course, that's just a tiny fraction of all the American auto companies that have exited out which only a few survive today.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._manufacturers

However, I don't see this company (ZAP) on that list.

Default Detroit Electric SP:01 production plans delayed again

Detroit Electric SP:01 production plans delayed again

The revival of Detroit Electric and the imminent arrival of its first vehicle, the SP:01 sports car, have us hooked, not because the EV is the most innovative design around (based on the Lotus Exige, it's strikingly similar to Tesla's discontinued Lotus-based Roadster), but because it promises to be yet another American-built high-performance EV with some unique twists. We like the fact that customers can opt for a four- or five-speed manual transmission (particularly unusual in an EV), or use the car to power a building in the case of a power outage. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait a bit longer before the SP:01 hits the road, because Detroit Electric has yet to finalize a lease or purchase agreement of its chosen production facility in Plymouth, Michigan, The Detroit News reports.

Detroit Electric has been trying to hammer out an agreement, but the negotiations for the Plymouth facility are producing enough uncertainty that Detroit Electric's North American President Don Graundstadt says the automaker-to-be is negotiating with other parties.

Previous plans for SP:01 production called for its manufacture to begin by this month, but plans change, and production will be pushed back. There is no mention of when the electric sports car will become a 2,500-unit-per-year reality, but rather ominously, The Detroit News notes that "the immediate fate of the automaker should be known in the next couple of weeks."

Default Detroit Electric moving SP:01 EV production to Holland

Detroit Electric moving SP:01 EV production to Holland

The plans that the revived Detroit Electric company made headlines with when it announced the all-electric SP:01 sports car were, at best, optimistic. To go from concept to starting production in half a year was always a going to be a challenging proposition, so we were hardly surprised when it was recently discovered that the company's offices in the Fisher Building are tumbleweed-empty and that it is not on track to build cars in the Detroit area. But we were caught a bit off guard with the just-announced change of plans, which will see the company step away from its Motor City namesake to build cars in Holland. According to a report by The Detroit News, the company still hopes to make cars in Michigan someday, just not right now.

The timeline has also been pushed back. Instead of the promised August start date, the Dutch plant is now supposed to start building the SP:01 in the fourth quarter. In a statement to the newspaper, Detroit Electric CEO Albert Lam said, "We are Detroit Electric, not London Electric. Our commitment to the city of Detroit, the state of Michigan and the United States is as strong as it ever was. While there have been some delays in our plan to start production in Detroit, many vehicle programs experience some form of delay." Despite this prominent delay, the company's website still promises it will have "two other high-performance models" in production "by the end of 2014." We'll see.

Detroit Electric has dropped plans to build its Lotus-based SP:01 electric sports car in The Motor City. In fact, it's not even being built in the North America. Instead, the company claims production is starting in Holland later this year. So much for being a Detroit Electric, eh?

"Production of Detroit Electric vehicles in Europe, along with Detroit, was always part of the plan," said Peter Rawlinson, a spokesperson for Detroit Electric, to Autoblog in an emailed statement. However, neither the car's original announcement nor its partnership with Geely make any mention of European production. Also, none of the other reporting Autoblog has done on the company has included planned foreign production. Rawlinson said that the exact production location would be announced in the coming weeks, and assembly would "start in the middle of this calendar year."

Detroit Electric had originally planned to build the SP:01 off the Lotus Exige platform at a factory in Plymouth, Michigan. Assembly was scheduled to begin in August 2013 with an annual capacity of 2,500 cars. However, negotiations with the plant fell through, and the company began looking for a new location. It had promised the SP:01 would offer 201 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque with energy provided by two 37-kilowatt-hour lithium-polymer batteries, and it would be priced at around $135,000.

The company is leaving a sliver of a chance of still building cars in Motown. "Detroit Electric has chosen to save its US resources for an upcoming new model – a sedan – to be engineered, developed and assembled in Detroit," said Rawlinson. For a business that has promised so much and delivered relatively little so far, these are big claims to make.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION ANNOUNCED FOR DETROIT ELECTRIC SP:01 ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR

· Exterior and final interior designs for SP:01 pure-electric sports car revealed
· On-road testing of SP:01 under way, ahead of start of production in early 2015
· SP:01 features bold new fastback design and futuristic, sporty interior
· Range of interior and exterior enhancements available at introduction
· Detroit Electric announces the appointment of Integrated Energy of South Korea as its first importer and distributor in Asia

DETROIT, USA – January 6, 2015: Detroit Electric has revealed the confirmed interior and exterior designs of its SP:01 pure-electric sports car, the next significant step in the re-birth of the iconic electric vehicle brand. Pre-production prototypes are currently undergoing extensive testing at Detroit Electric's state-of-the-art production facility in Leamington Spa, UK, ahead of the start of production in early 2015.

The lightweight SP:01 will be the world's fastest pure-electric production two-seater sports car when it goes on sale in Asia, Europe and North America in 2015. The SP:01 features a 285 HP / 210 kW electric motor, carbon fibre body panels and manual transmission as standard. An optional single-speed and twin-speed automatic transmission are also available. The SP:01 promises to deliver blistering acceleration, reaching 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds) and an impressive top speed of 155 mph (249 km/h).

Exterior design

The design of SP:01 has been subtly updated since the prototype was unveiled at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, to further improve the vehicle's aerodynamic performance. The changes to SP:01's design ensure that it will deliver on its promise to set new standards for performance and handling in the EV segment.

The most striking element of the design is the new fastback configuration, which replaces the prototype's flying buttresses on either side of the rear window. A large sculptural rear wing and under-body diffuser have also been incorporated to reduce lift and improve handling at higher speeds.

A range of exterior styling options will be available from launch, including a carbon-fibre rear spoiler, diffuser and battery cover. Metallic paint options for the SP:01 include Performance Black, Performance Blue, Performance Green, Performance Orange and Performance Silver, as well as 'Special White' and 'Special Red'. Customised paint colours are also available.

Interior design

In harmony with the bold exterior, the cabin of the SP:01 evokes the brand's mantra of 'Pure Electric Performance' through a futuristic, sporty design, with sweeping lines and bold shapes suggesting speed, agility and athletic poise.

In order to create a clean, streamlined cabin, the SP:01's centre console features a prominent 8.4-inch touchscreen tablet, which replaces all analogue dials and switches on the fascia. Detroit Electric's SAMI (Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment) application utilises an open-source Android operating system, which provides access to a wide range of functions, including music player, HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning), satellite navigation and vehicle systems status, such as battery charge, V2X (Vehicle-to-Grid and Vehicle-to-Home) and other vehicle telemetry.

Via mobile connectivity, SAMI can also be used to make mobile telephone calls, stream data and access the internet, while providing remote access to a range of vehicle functions, including the control of charging/discharging, climate control, and full vehicle telemetry. The open-source platform will enable Detroit Electric's customers to access apps developed by third parties via SAMI's in-car interface, providing numerous opportunities to enhance the user experience.

The SP:01 offers a choice of leather or Alcantara sports seats (black, with body-colour accents), power electric windows, power central locking, ambient cabin lighting, embroidered floor mats and Bluetooth connectivity. Customers can also choose to personalise their vehicle with seating and interior décor options, including coloured leather seats (red, beige, tan and black) or two-tone leather seats (black with a choice of red, beige, blue, orange or grey), and optional leather trim for door panels, door sills and dashboard.

A selection of bespoke alloy wheels, designed by Detroit Electric's Head of Design, Jerry Chung and named 'Anderson Diamond', 'Anderson Satin' and 'Anderson Gloss' after the founder of Detroit Electric, William C. Anderson, will be available at launch.

Distributor partnerships

As Detroit Electric builds up to the start of full-scale production, the company recently announced the appointment of Integrated Energy as its official importer and distributor in South Korea. As part of the agreement, the first Detroit Electric showroom in Asia is scheduled to open in Seoul in early 2015. Detroit Electric and Integrated Energy will further extend their cooperation to develop V2X (Vehicle-to-Grid and Vehicle-to-Home) technology by establishing a pilot programme in Jeju Island, South Korea, with a fleet of vehicles supplied by Detroit Electric.

"This is a strategic step in the development of Detroit Electric business in the global market and we are delighted to partner with Integrated Energy to deliver our high performance vehicle and services to Korean customers," commented Albert Lam, Chairman and Group CEO of Detroit Electric. "With the vision beyond the EV business, the joint V2X pilot project in Jeju Island with Integrated Energy will certainly be a showcase of our innovative technology and sustainable business model."

Detroit Electric was revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering Group and Executive Director of Lotus Cars of England, with a vision to produce an electric vehicle that seamlessly integrates refined aesthetics, innovative technology and superior handling and performance.
