They have to consider gas mileage as well too now. Everyone is so concerned with drag coefficient today.

I just realised.

All the cars with pop-ups had low hoods and front bumpers. The reason is for aerodynamics right?

The problem now is Euro's pedestrian safety standard which requires a higher bumper or hood.

If the hood or bumper is higher, than pop-ups are not really practical.

Therefore if you guys like pop-ups, you're gonna have to think of a modern day version and adapt it to the modern designs.

how about the Lambo Miura style of pop-up, would that designed be useful in conforming to the pedestrian bumper laws?

Not to mention the tendency for one or both headlights to freeze in the closed positon during the winter months.

If I rememeber correctly my old Accord had a setting to leave them up to prevent freezing.

I have always hated them, and sure don't miss them.

Ohh? Never thought of that one.

The funny thing is that the old Corolla SR5s here have them permanently up. I almost never see any with the lights down. Then comes along a Porsche... 928? And it popped back down when he turned off the car.

Also, isn't it a hassle to clean it?

they looked really cool on porsches, and i remember in beverly hills cop, in one of the opening scenes, you see eddie murphy step into his red ferrari and the you then see the pop up headlights come out of the hood, it looked so cool

Never liked any vehicle with pop up headlights. It just gives them a bug eyed look when they are up.

I liked them, especially on my Prelude, but I can't say I miss them. I remember when the a@@h*** vehicle inspector almost failed me on my inspection when one of the lights wouldn't open after he leaned his entire body weight on it looking under the front of the car.

And, when sitting in the drivers' seat, they can also block some forward vision, particularly for short people.
