Post Press Release: Solara Is Selected As The Pace Car

Toyota's Solara Is Selected As The Pace Car For The Toyota Grand Prix Of Long Beach

04/09/2004 Georgetown, KY

A Georgetown-built Solara coupe will serve as the official pace car for the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 16-18, 2004. The 30th Anniversary race weekend also features the 28th annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race and the opening round of the Toyota Atlantic
Championship Series.

The Solara coupe is built exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. (TMMK). Modifications were made to the Solara pace car by Motorsports Technical Group, a Toyota business partner located in Torrance, Calif.

TMMK launched production of the second generation Solara coupe in July 2003 and recently began production of the Solara Convertible. TMMK is Toyota's largest North American manufacturing facility with production capacity of 500,000 vehicles and engines per year. The plant employs more than 7,000 team members.

Toyota has been involved with the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach since the inaugural race in 1975 when the Celica GT Liftback served as the pace car. The manufacturer has been the title sponsor of the event since 1980.

Sounds like a pretty nice pace car. I'll have to check it out on TV.
