Do you have an early-2000s well-maintained lexus with clear coat failure?
Just wondering who else.
My silver 2003 ES has specks of clear coat failure on the trunk lid, and even though there's no clear coat peeling on the roof yet, I am seeing some blotchiness on the roof, which I presume will lead to peeling soon.
Car is parked outside 24/7, and waxed several times a year.
But clearly, wax does not last more than a month in the sun, and the paint goes unprotected a couple months at a time when wax wears off, before the next waxing.
If wax does protect paint from failure, it really needs to be built-up monthly if parked outside, from day 1.
I'm wondering if the roof can be saved with extra layers of clear coat before it peels, or if it's already compromised.

Its been parked outside for 13 years in what I assume is extremely sunny southern California. I'd say that is about what you should expect, the uv rays are a mean mistress.

Most wax won't last that long under the sun. Many wax will lose their effectiveness even with a gentle car wash. You need something more durable like a sealant that will last months, not weeks.
I use CarPro Hydro2 on all my vehicles once every 3 months. The application is quicker and easier than traditional wax, yet will resist chemicals, UV, etc even better. CarPro offers something more durable like the Reload which will last 4-6 months.
As long as water beads off your paint rather than sheeting, then you know the protection is there.

Your wax is probably doing very little to protect the clearcoat from UV, which unless your paint is defective, is what is causing the damage. So by my thinking, you've basically been doing nothing all these years to protect your paint from damage.
You need to be using a sealant or coating for more UV protection. I have two cars that are only a year or two newer than yours and both look better than brand new. Both are wearing fairly new applications of coatings, one has 22PLE VX Pro, the other has Cquartz UK. Earlier in their lives they received regular applications of sealants, typically Klasse, Zaino, or Optimum Opti-Coat. Even though new products outperform it, I believe all those years I used Zaino greatly reduced the damage from UV.
