I was told by a co-worker that the new GX-470 is pretty much a nicely dressed up 4 runners.......is this correct? similar to the landcruizer and the LX470 deal.....
Technically yes.. the GX470 shares a lot with the 4Runner, including mostly the major mechanicalsand basic platform. But they are MUCH more different than the Land Cruiser/LX470 combo. The bodies of the GX and 4Runner are completely different, as well as completely different interiors. Whereas on the Land Cruiser and LX470, they are essentially the same. So it's more than just a dressed up 4Runner.
There will be a Lexus based on the Sequoia.. due out in 2005 as the current LX fades away. Rear door comes from its japanese and european model, where it sells as the new Land Cruiser
Have you seen the new 4runner in person? My god that is a beautiful truck with a huge V8 in it.
So if you really don't need the extra space and third row seating, why not get the lower cost 4runner Limited? It even comes with their sports suspension option, which is what we are all in need of.
The GX looks nice, but IMO it looks bulky and just overweight, where the 4runner looks more lean and sporty.
The new 4runner's shifter looks like it came from a car, where the GX shifter is not that pretty, long and protruding!
Lexus should have come out with a 4runner version like Infiniti has the QX4.

The GX brochures are in! The brand new GX is NOT the same as the Toyota 4Runner. It is called Toyota Land Cruiser Prado in Japan. Even though they share the same engine and drivetrain, however, the GX (Prado) is more inclined towards the Land Cruiser (LX). It is really offroad capable and has about 250 brand new technology patents pending. Nothing else in the market even comes close. Also, the luxury side didn't come short either. According the Mark and Levinson, they spent the most time and effort for the GX than any other Lexus models and is their BEST one yet. Now, if you can get in the waiting list a little bit sooner...
Let me know if you have any question about the GX.
Originally posted by 1SICKLEX Driver's postions are very different. 4-runner is sportier, the seat is 4 inches lower than the GX (hence the high roofline).
People that don't know **** usually say "they are the same". Ask them, which one would u drive?
1SICKLEX, you are right, they are not the same vehicles, but I'd still rather have a true Lexus Version of the 4runner than the bulkier GX. This is all preference of course, since the new 4runner looks great!
It is the Japanese and European model Land Cruiser.. but that Land Cruiser in itself is different from the American market Land Cruiser/LX470. It IS true that the GX and 4Runner are RELATED model, sharing the same mechanicals and platform. There is not much technology wise that is available on the GX that isn't available on the 4Runner. So you can change the height of the rear suspension in the GX.. in the 4Runner you can get a rear air self-leveling suspension.. achieves much of the same purpose.

IMO, the new 4runner still looks sleeker and sportier than the GX. Again this is a matter of opinion, since if they slapped a Lexus Emblem on the new 4runner, I would be all over it in a heartbeat. The GX's lines have to get some getting used to, but maybe if I saw it in person, it would look much better from the photos. It still looks big and bulky which SUV owner still like.
How can you resist this new 4runner with the V8 - loaded with NAV?
I like the GX's lines much better than the 4runners. The wheel wells in the 4runner are not rounded enough, instead they look like half a circle.
I also don't like the small side window in the rear corner. I feel the GX tackles this much better. The rear of both I am not too fond of but still my vote goes toward the GX.
........are pretty much identical. They are based on the same platform as well. Even though I like the GX styling a bit better than the 4Runner, this does not make much difference to me as I'm not into cosmetics/appearance.
The main reason to get a GX over the 4Runner is the seating position. The driver's seats in the 4Runner are not very comfortable......you practically sit on the floor .....not the typical COMFORTABLE CHAIR-LIKE SUV seats! .......Now, since the GX seats are supposedly 2 to 3 inches higher than the 4Runner (with those Captain's arms ) they're bound to be comfy! ........other things that do make the GX a more attractive proposition are the Mark Levinson audio and Voice-Activated Navigation System (especially important on Toyota/Lexus vehicles cause they become inoperable when the vehicle starts moving - a stupid "smart-alec" design by Toyota )
Parking mirror, supposed to let you see how close to the curb you are - you have to remember these are RHD, so its on the passenger side. My Harrier has one too - totally useless ...
