I only use drop down panel when need to open gas tank. So, I made it a habit to open and to close right away. Is yours drop out by itself, or you just forget to close it?
I almost always forget to open the little trap door for filling up.
Usually have to open it after I'm out of the car and then it's bang upon reentry!
Lesser cars don't need a stupid button to open the fuel flap. On many, you just press on the flap and it flips open. They lock-up automatically when you lock the doors.
OK. At the risk of being flamed-You guys complain too much. Every car, motorcycle, washing machine, TV-well, everything in this world is not perfect. Learn to accept and work around these minor issues. This car is very nice to say the least. Enjoy it. Go out to your GS right now and sit in it. Tell it you are sorry. You guys should be happy you own a car like this. Just my opinion. I'm an old guy but wiser by the year. Cheers!
As far as I'm concerned, it's not the fact that it is a knee whacker that bothers me the most, but that the panel location is so ergonomically lame. I have to tilt my body to the left and crane my neck to see the buttons on the panel. I'm not sure what the Lexus engineers were thinking of (if at all). Since Lexus is so concerned about safety, why didn't they put some delay feature that would automatically stow the panel after X number of seconds (spring loaded electronic release mechanism). Well they do call it "the pursuit of perfection" which is somewhat analogous to "the practice of medicine". Guess who they're practicing on?
I've done it about 4-5x in 15k miles of ownership. Yes, it freaking HURTS! The part I don't understand is, what is the purpose of concealing the buttons in a flip down panel? You can't see the buttons even when the panel is open! If rumors are true, they will have addressed this issue in the '08 GS by relocating the fuel flap release button.
When the dealer had the GS as loaners I did this once. Everytime I lent one out to a cust I made sure to tell them to close the panel when done. I had a few come back and tell me they had forgotten. Still a very nice car.
