Ok, I want to start by saying this is an exellent forum. REally good posts and information!!
I bought an 03GX and at 2k miles I noticed the rear end thump driveshaft issue. I brought it into the dealer and they said they had to lube the driveshaft and do something to the yolk and spline. Not sure on the terms I am by no means a mechanic. Well the problem was fixed for the next 3 or 4k miles. But now the thump is back. Has anyone else had this reoccurance after the dealer stated that it was fixed?
For you guys with the bad thump problem that was temporarily fixed with a lubing of the shaft or whatever, have you considered just asking your dealer to do this lube/shaft/spline procedure every time you bring it in for an oil change/service? Seems like they could give you a loaner for the day and lube her up so she'd be good for the next 3-4k miles.
when i setup an appointment yesterday 2 get the thump fixed on my gx, my service advisor wasn't there but another person helped me. then he asked me if my service advisor ordered the parts yet. then i said that he just said 2 bring it in. i don't know if they'll just lube mine or replace something.
I've heard the same noise too from the rear. I brought the car in for 1K service today and told the service advisor, after the tech checked it out and from previous history from other car with the same noise. She told me she will order a new drive shaft and give me a call when they're in, since they don't know the ETA for the part. Guess I have to wait...

Thanks for any information.
Funny for me, they replaced the drive shaft. I am shocked that Lexus dealerships have different methods of fixing issues. Why would my dealer replace a drive shaft, and yours just lube the driveshaft.
Your correct in speaking about the spline though, that's what my dealer said the issue was as well. They just executed a different fix for it.
It's very disappointing having to deal with all the mechanical issues relating to this vehicle. Did Lexus release the vehicle too soon? In any event, my GX has been in the shop on ten seperate occassions.
But I thought that drive shaft replacements hadn't worked so far? Have they come up with something new? I only get it sometimes, maybe once a month, but my wife says it happens to her all the time. I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with the way that each of us applies the brakes. She says it happens more when she stops going down an incline.
