timing belt help (cam marks)
92 ls400
have done this before on another 1uz with great success, however i cannot get this one to lign up correctly.
Bottom crank is at TDC-0*:
and i have both crank pulley's lined up to the marks on the motor,
when i wrap the belt around pulley L this is where the mark goes:
both pulleys do the same thing, what am i doing wrong?

check the marks on the old belt with the new one, could be a mixup?? somehow.. or maybe turn the belt around??
OR: put the crank shaft keyway at 1 o'clock, line the cams up with their marks, and put the belt on, the belt might be marked wrong??

If new belt is the right belt, you might have accidentally rotated the cam pulley.
So, first confirm that the new belt is the correct one, then just pull the cam pulley to the timing mark on the belt.

the belt i have is a Gates T298.
So are you saying, Leave the bottom crank at TDC Then just spin the cams to the marks in the belt?
Both marks on the belt end up at 12 oclock on the pulley.

Yes, as long as you have the correct belt, and the correct timing marks on the belt.

First make sure your crank is set to TDC 0, then the belt mark for the crank should be dead center bottom at the 6 o'clock position. That is the single white mark on the belt is center bottom of crank gear. I was doing the same thing until I put the belt on the crank first then I routed it up to the left then right cam pulleys. Dont just turn the cam pullys, the marks should line up with the marks on the motor. If all of this is correct, you may have the wrong belt.

Pull plug from no.1 cylinder. A piston stop is a good tool to have, but in a pinch a long screw driver will work. Have a partner hold tool until the piston comes to the top of its travel. This is gonna get ya close. Check ur marks on the crank to get it dead on.

So what im Going to do is pull cam covers off. Align the dots.
Put crank at tdc and place belt in proper place.
Not worry about the marks on the belt on cam pulleys bc I know
Everything will be lined up. After I pull the pin. I'm going to rotate 2full ones and
They should line back up at tdc

Buy an OEM belt and call it a day.
