States With The Most Expensive Cars
Hannah Elliott, 11.06.09, 04:00 PM EST
Big cities aren't the only places people drive high-end vehicles.

Broadly speaking, however, California, Florida and New York are the epicenters for luxury and exotic cars. That's important because automakers must cater to their widest audiences as they introduce each new model--especially with launches of 2010 models in high gear.

Behind the Numbers
To determine the states where drivers purchase the most luxury cars, we used data provided by Experian Automotive, a Schaumburg, Ill.-based analysis and consulting firm. Experian provided registration numbers, by car brand, for each state and further itemized each car brand based on where it registered the most units. We then calculated the percentage of luxury cars sold compared to total new cars sold in each state and ranked them accordingly.

Pockets of Luxury
The big three sellers on our luxury list are Lexus (153,809 units sold nationwide), BMW (144,472 units sold nationwide) and Mercedes-Benz (131,146 units sold nationwide).

Why ? because they buy more Bentley's and Astons ?

Rolls Royce and Maybach do not appear in this list at all, but they both significantly more expensive than Bentley and Aston, so they sell fewer of them, but those who bought them have more expensive tastes. I wonder which states sold the most Rolls Royce's and Maybach's ?

I find it really interesting that Maserati is the leading "niche" brand...however they define that?

"Most Popular Luxury Brand" is Lexus for almost all of them.

Why isn't GA ranked 5th and VA ranked 6th? Looking at the numbers I don't understand.

A lot of this has to do with demographics and cultures too. For example, in my parent's Porter Ranch, CA neighborhood, there's a high concentration of Korean people. Every other driveway has a Lexus RX in it.

Especially since they're about to collapse under debt and have the second highest unemployment rate in the country. But as long as they look good going down.
