Default Whining noise near Torque Converter

Hello,

I have a '96 LS400 with 170,000 miles and am getting this whining noise from the bell housing near the torque converter.

The noise is the loudest when I start the car when it is cold. Once it starts to warm up, the noise decreases. But when the engine is reved up to about 2000 rpm in park, the noise comes back.

When driving, the whining could be heard. The transmission shifts fine without any issue. But occasionally when coming to a complete stop, a clunk is heard and the rpm drops to about 150 rpm causing the car to shake a little.

I went underneath the car and am hearing noise near the torque converter. It sounds like a seized bearing. Is there a bearing near the torque converter? Is this what happens when the torque converter is bad? I did a transmission fluid flush at 155,000 miles with the factory fluid and the transmission is shifting fine so I don't think the transmission is the problem. I would like to hear your opinions. Thanks for your time.

Sounds like your transmission mount is gone. Replacing the mount will reduce noise, vibrations and the whining you describe.

I cannot tell you more without a closer inspection.

i agree with grand ls... transmission mount.

or if its not that id say the torque converter is shot... which shouldnt really be an issue unless if this thing was drived hard etc...

if it is, the best replacement out there is the one from lextreme

I changed the tranny mount 6 months ago so I doubt that is the problem.

Could a worn torque converter make this kind of noise? Anyone have any experience.

If it is just the torque converter, could I just change this or do I have to rebuild the transmission.

you can change just the TC, although it's rare to see them just go.
