Left Front Speaker Only Works Occasionally
I have a 99GS400 with the Nakamichi sound system. The left front speaker (the one in the driver side door) works only intermittantly. When I first got the car it worked perfectly for a few weeks, then I noticed one day there was very little sound coming out of it. That lasted for a few days, then went away all together and I almost forgot about it until about a week ago when it stopped working again
It's VERY erratic, sometimes it will work for a month straight, sometimes it will stop working for a few hours, then work again. Currently it's been on and off for the past week or so. If I fade the stereo all the way to the front and the left, you can hear faint music and a lot of static and distorted bass
I got the door taken off and the speaker looked at by a local audio shop, but the guy who did it said he didn't know what the problem could be becuase it's so inconsistent. I'm really clueless about car audio so I would appreciate any advice you guys could give me
The guy that checked it out also said that he thought it might be the amp, but the Nakamichi has a seperate amp in each speaker and I would have to go to my Lexus dealership to get the whole thing replaced, which would cost a lot of money. I'm hoping there's an easy fix but I'm not sure. Has anybody else ever experienced this?

i had a similar problem in my first gen GS, the speaker wires run thru a rubber conduit by the the door hinge, they were shorting in there. i cut the wires and spliced them back together. i assume it's the same design in the second gen GS.

There isnt an amp for each speaker. Just swap the speaker wires for the front left and right and if the problem swaps sides, you know its the amp.

99 GS300 here, and mine started doing this yesterday! On mine...a quick flick of the volumeknob will fix the problem...for a while...
I feel a new headunit and a new set of speakers comming

99 GS400 as well and same problem. I usually have to mess with the volume to get it cranking. I turn it up and then lower it. Very annoying. Installing aftermarket unit over the winter. Hopefully itll go away.s

2002 GS300 with same problem. Just hit the door panel and it works again. Took it to the dealer and they said everything is "fine". Tried blaming it on my ipod. Retards.

I gently nudged me kne on the speakercover today...and the sound came back when doing this...so it looks like a theres a bad conector on the speaker....and this also sems to be quite common?

Have yall noticed if its with FM, AM tape or CD? Mine's the passenger side on my 00 gs4 but i notice it ONLY on AM radio.
Both am & fm radio also sounds has WAY less sound quality than CD. My Ford Ranger FM sounds just as good as the CD, and maybe better than the lexus..of course the lexus CD blows it away.
