GS400 are 90-00.
GS430 are 01-05.

400s did not have wood steering wheels while the 430s did. Which car do you have? The two steering wheels are not directly interchangeable as the airbags are different shapes. There has also been disagreeing discussions on whether or not the airbags will plug in compatibly.

Im looking for a 01 or newer steering wheel but the airbag I think has to be a 01 since my car is a 400. Is that true? Single and dual stage airbags is what I understand and the 400 has a single stage. if I'm incorrectly speaking please let me know. I want to get the right setup.

99-01 single stage
02-05 dual

I want the airbag to be functional and not just a dummy bag if you know what I mean.

Color leather is gray.

I spoke to JM Lexus parts associate and he told me that any airbag from 2001 and up will fit in my car and the airbag will work. Is that right?? If its is my understanding of the setup is all wrong.

from what little i know, everything after 2001 is dual stage, which means anything after that will not plug into a pre-2001 single stage SRS harness.

98GS430

The 01 on GS's are dual stage, however, if you get the steering wheel and air bag the new air bag will plug into the older harnesses in the 98-00 GS's. I have a 1999 GS400, with a 2003 GS 300 steering wheel with the new air bag, works perfect, no airbag lights on.

Also, your all wrong about no wood steering weel being available for the 98-2000 400's, there is one. Its very rare, but if you find a 2003 or 2004 GS 300 sportdesign, they came equipped with a wood steering wheel with the e-shift buttons. Unfortunetly, its only available in black. I have an ivroy interior, which is why I havent been able to get one.

I work for a dealer, and i've done successful swaps on 3 GS's now with the newer steering wheels and air bags. It can be done.

I remember reading that the plugs were different on single stage airbags than on the dual ones( someone was looking for a adapter plug to get theres to work). Or is that a 01 is the last year that the plug was the same as the 98-2000 series?

If I had a 03 GS wood steering wheel and a 03 airbag that it can be connected to a 99GS400 that the plugs will connect?

Just dont want to buy the wrong year wheel and airbag as dont anyone else in the market for a wood wheel and airbag.

I have a wood steering from here. It is in excellent shape. I got it for my GF's car, but I decided to go in a diferent direction. I will take what I paid which was a steal at $250. It is the tan/taupe color, as far as the airbag goes..... it will be a single stage and if you want the newer one with the emblem, just look for an 00 and up RX. Swapping a different model/year steering wheel is not quite the same as having an OEM one available for 98-00 GS400s. I don't recall Lexus offering wood wheels for the 98-00 GS400s.
