Default Have oem GS rims? Try this mod! - UPDATED PICS

So I've been thinking about painting my Work rims that I just bought since I was quoted $170 a wheel by some local refinishing shop.

To try my hand out - I decided to use a stock 17 GS wheel and to my surprise (and my friend's surprise and my girlfriend's surprise) it looks daaaaaaaaaaang awesome. Sorry Alex - I didn't wait up for ya - but I called ya!!

Here's your average stock rim with some curb rash...

Doing some light sanding to get rid of the clear coat...

Oof - curb rash!!

Here's Zach (4Grainr) helping me out with the sanding...

Sanded the clear coat and most of the paint off the rim. The rim is shiney because I just wiped it down with a wet rag.

Default primer!!

So after sanding the crap out of the wheel and in some parts going right through to the metal it was time to primer the wheel.

If you do this - you'll want to remove the clear coat and as much of the paint as possible. After you do that - you'll use primer because it sticks to metal better than paint and paint sticks to primer better than metal.

So - on to the primer!! I almost felt like being white-trash and leaving it like this but I bought the paint already so I kept going.

Make sure you wipe off any dust that may have settled in with the primer so your paint comes out ok.

Also - note for the future - don't touch the paint before it dries... It's ok though - all you have to do is repaint it - sand it with 2000 grit sand paper until it's smooth and go over it again with another layer of paint. you'll probably want to do 2-3 layers.

If you notice the paint imperfection on the bottom of the painted rim - i didn't really care tonight - i'll just sand it tomorrow and give it another coat. kinda tired now...

Here's a final photo of all three rims.

Thumbs up

Very nice!!!
Looks GREAT

Now I know what I can do with my old rims.
Where can I get clear coat at? Do I have to get that from a paint store? I have heard that clear coat is a pain in the but to put on.... Any truth to this?

Thanks for a great cheap mod.

What do you think?

hey man- if you use DUPLICOLOR GUNMETAL WHEEL PAINT/SPRAY you will be able to avoid the primer and the clear coat (might still want to sand a little)..and probably have far less of a chance of that paint chipping off when you go to get the tires mounted back up..maybe thats what you used, but you didnt mention so im just saying now..they wont look so great when they go to run the tire around that rim and the paint flakes off around the whole edge ya know!? ive used the duplicolor gunmetal wheel coat (its in a spray can like regular spray paint they also have silver, bronze, black, etc.) and had no issues afterwards when the tires got put back on, finish also lasted for about 2 years..i did this to the steelies on one of my hondas i drive in the winter and they all held up great...
