Toyota Debuts Insane 2,000-Horsepower Land Cruiser at SEMA
Every year at SEMA, you can expect Toyota to bring a few interesting builds to the showroom floor. This year, the automaker brought out a 2,000-horsepower monster that claims to have a top speed of 220 MPH. Oh by the way, it’s a 2016 Land Cruiser, or in this case, a “Land Speed Cruiser.” When you think about a car with those outrageous numbers, that last thing on your mind would be a full-size, luxury SUV. But whatever, Toyota thought it would be a neat idea, and boy did they make the right call. The Land Speed Cruiser was by far the brand’s most-talked-about SEMA vehicle.
Getting a car to hit 220 MPH is a feat within itself, but getting a large, heavy SUV up to those speeds is a whole different story. For starters, the 3UR-FE 5.7L V8 was fitted with two “volleyball sized” turbochargers, courtesy of Garrett. The twin-turbocharged V8 was then mated to an ATI racing transmission.
Toyota didn’t reveal any details on the modifications made to the chassis, but we can be sure the frame has been tweaked for maximum performance. In addition to making the Land Speed Cruiser lighter and stronger, the suspension and exterior were also addressed to help make it slip through the air as easily as possible. The ride height was obviously lowered to help reduce drag and lift, meaning this particular Land Cruiser is no off-road warrior after all. An aerodynamic hood can be spotted up front, as well as a rear spoiler and diffuser to help with the airflow out back.
Set to be the fastest SUV in the world, we can’t help but be anxious to see the Land Speed Cruiser hit its 220 MPH top-speed promise. For now, all we have are words to go by. Let’s see it Toyota!
