The Terminator Cometh: Introducing the TMG TS-650

By -

There something vaguely sinister about it. Maybe it’s the setting of dark clouds and rain slick surfaces that bring to mind that scene from Terminator when Arnold first shows up. Or maybe it’s just the fact that this car is just that agressive. They’ve even seen fit to give a name fitting it’s nefarious look: The TS-650.

If anyone was still wondering whether or not Lexus was serious about changing their image, this should be the final nail in the coffin.

It’s not a pretty car. At all. The hood has two gaping gashes and the front-end looks suspiciously like a WALD body kit. The thing is… In this case it’s warranted. Those massive hood vents? Well, they’re there ventilate the 640 hp twin-turbo V8 under the hood. The same goes for the massive intakes in the front bumper that likely channel air to the TS-650’s intercoolers. Clearly the modus operandi here is function over form. And you know what? I’m more than okay with that.

A 640 horsepower sedan that’ll hit 200mph is allowed to be ugly. Especially if it’s grippier and faster than it’s rivals. If it does manage that much power and speed, that would make the TS-650 the fastest full size sedan available from a luxury car manufacturer. The S65 AMG comes close (620hp) but doesn’t win this war of superlatives. Of course, the main difference here being that you can actually go out and buy the Benz, while the TS-650 is just vaporware… For now.

But it won’t be that way for long. TMG is bringing it out to the Essen Motorshow next week. Not only will this mark the debut of what likely will be the fastest full-size production sedan, but it’s also TMG’s first time appearing as an in-house tuning firm for Toyota. I’d say that’s a more interesting fact that this particular car is. Not necessarily because i’m look forward to a TMG tuned Camry, but Toyota has put some skin in the game regarding performance cars with the FR-S and the LF-CC.

Time will tell whether or not this is a pipe dream or a preview of the future. What I do know is that there will never be enough super sedans.
