Is the Lexus RX300 a Classic?
Not many people would ever consider the Lexus RX300 a classic car, or a machine that is intrinsically interesting, exciting, or valuable even. However, a writer by the name of Elizabeth Sobieski wants to change your mind about that. A contributor for the Huffington Post, Sobieski penned a love letter to her Lexus that breaks into various details about just why this car should be considered a mold-breaking iconic car like the Mustang, Model T, and more.
And once you read her article, you may just agree. The crossover market is booming these days, and the entire idea of building a soft-roader on a car chassis started with the original RX almost 25 years ago. The shape, the chassis design, the overall feel, and the entire segment was created by this one little odd-ball from Japan, and now the US and the rest of the world can’t seem to buy enough of them.
The biggest boom in automotive sales since the Mustang invented the pony car has been the CUV boom of the 2000s. Every major automotive company in the world now makes some sort of small crossover, and even many luxury marques like Jaguar and Bentley are looking to steal sales with luxury crossovers of some sort.
With such a legacy behind it, I agree that the Lexus RX300 should deserve some recognition. I still don’t think they are exciting, but they are important.
